Play Heroes III, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and Transport Tycoon on Android (2026)
VCMI, OpenRCT2 and OpenTTD rebuild three classic PC strategy games as open source for Android. What each needs from the original game, and how to set it up.
Three classic PC games now run on Android through open-source projects that rebuilt their engines: VCMI for Heroes of Might and Magic III, OpenRCT2 for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, and OpenTTD for Transport Tycoon Deluxe. They differ in one important way: two of them need files from the original game, which you have to own, and one doesn’t. This site hosts only the open-source apps, never the original games’ files.
What you need
- VCMI needs the original Heroes III, the Shadow of Death or Complete edition. Its Android guide recommends GOG’s offline installer: you select the
.exeand the.bininside the app and it imports the data. The 2015 HD Edition doesn’t work. - OpenRCT2 needs the desktop RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 or RCT Classic (GOG, Steam or CD-ROM), not the mobile RCT Classic apps. You copy its
DataandObjDatafolders into a folder calledrct2on the phone yourself; the guide warns the first start may crash once or twice. - OpenTTD needs nothing else: the APK includes free replacement graphics, sound effects and music, so it is ready to play as installed.

How finished each one is on a phone
- VCMI has its own Android guide and a Google Play version. It plays in landscape with haptic feedback, has basic controller support, accepts a mouse, and offers mods (including Horn of the Abyss) in its launcher.
- OpenRCT2 works, but its own guide says the interface and controls are “not optimized for phones”: a tap is a left click and a double tap a right click.
- OpenTTD on Android is a community port, based on a version from 2024; the official project has moved on to 15.3. The port adds a vertical toolbar, adjustable button size and confirmations for building, but multiplayer only works with servers on the same old version.
Updates and signatures
Each file can only be updated by a file signed with the same key. VCMI and OpenTTD here are F-Droid’s builds, so they can’t update, or be updated by, the projects’ own APKs or Google Play versions. OpenRCT2 is the project’s own APK and isn’t on Google Play; it checks GitHub for new releases at most once a day. Before switching between versions of any of them, back up your saves.
