Introduction

OpenRCT2 is “an open-source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (RCT2)”, with scenario and sandbox play and cooperative multiplayer. It is an engine: “OpenRCT2 requires original files of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 to play”, which the project points to on Steam and GOG.com. This site hosts only the engine. Since version 0.5.0 the APK includes OpenRCT2’s own data, so nothing else needs downloading.

Setting it up

The project’s Android guide says the port “does require some additional steps of manual setup”:

  • Only the desktop RCT2 or RCT Classic works (GOG, Steam, CD-ROM and so on), not the mobile RCT Classic apps.
  • On the phone’s main storage, create a folder called rct2 and copy the Data and ObjData folders into it. Landscapes, Saved Games, Scenarios and Tracks are optional. For RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 content, add a rct1 folder with its Data folder.
  • Install the APK, start it and allow storage access. Saves and custom content go in an openrct2-user folder that the game creates.
  • The guide warns that “the first launch may take some time, or crash once or twice”.

What to expect on a phone

In the project’s own words, the user interface and controls are “not optimized for phones”: a single tap is a left click and a double tap a right click. If the interface is too small, the guide points to the Window scale factor setting.

What goes online

  • Update checks: the game asks GitHub for the latest release at most once a day, and the Android build keeps this on.
  • Multiplayer: you can host or join games; the server list comes from servers.openrct2.io.
  • Missing objects: when a park uses scenery you don’t have, you can choose to download it from OpenRCT2’s object service.
  • The project’s privacy statement says “no tracking or analytics services are implemented”. Its optional crash-report upload is only built for Windows.

About this file

  • This is the official Android build from the project’s GitHub releases (version 0.5.5), signed by the OpenRCT2 team. OpenRCT2 isn’t on Google Play, and Android may warn that the APK is untrusted when you install it.
  • The code is under GPL-3.0 or later. The OpenRCT2 objects and title sequences bundled in the APK are under CC BY 4.0.
  • The Brazilian Portuguese translation is maintained and nearly complete.
  • The 218.8 MB file runs on Android 7.0 and later, on 32- and 64-bit ARM and 64-bit x86, and declares 6 permissions, including access to all files. Our scan found no trackers.

Common questions

Is this APK the official OpenRCT2 release?

Yes. It is the file from the project’s v0.5.5 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked OpenRCT2 (SHA-256 f22b57042c6d4114b40ce559216ac049cdae9b34b830f7b0f018bca090ef99a9); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.

What Android version does OpenRCT2 need?

Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 0.5.5 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can OpenRCT2 access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 6 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does OpenRCT2 contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 0.5.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is OpenRCT2 open source?

Yes. OpenRCT2 is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/OpenRCT2/OpenRCT2.

Which version of RollerCoaster Tycoon do I need?

The desktop RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 or RCT Classic, for example from GOG, Steam or the original CD-ROM. The project says the Android and iOS versions of RCT Classic can’t be used. Copy at least the Data and ObjData folders into a folder called rct2 on the phone’s main storage; files from RCT1 in a folder called rct1 are optional.

Why does it ask for access to all files?

The game reads your RollerCoaster Tycoon files from the rct2 (and rct1) folders you create on the phone’s main storage, and keeps saves and custom content in an openrct2-user folder there. Reading shared folders like these is what Android’s “All files access” permission covers, and the APK declares it.
