Introduction
OpenTTD is “a transport simulation game based upon the popular game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, written by Chris Sawyer”. You run a transport company, typically from 1950, building rail, road, air and sea routes to carry passengers and cargo between towns and industries. The official OpenTTD project releases it for Windows, macOS and Linux; this app is a separate, unofficial port.
Which version this is
- The port started as pelya’s Android version of OpenTTD. F-Droid’s description says this is “a fork of https://github.com/pelya/openttd-android since development there is on hold currently”, maintained by the n-ice-community project.
- It is based on OpenTTD 14.1, released in May 2024. The official project has since moved on to 15.3 (April 2026), so newer features are missing. The port’s repository has work on 15.x versions, but F-Droid hadn’t published them when we checked.
- Saves from this version should open in newer desktop releases: the official project guarantees that every OpenTTD release loads savegames from all older ones.
- Google Play has pelya’s own version under a different package name (org.openttd.sdl); it can’t update this one, or the other way round.
Playing on a phone
OpenTTD’s interface was made for a mouse. The port adds touch-oriented settings: a vertical toolbar, adjustable button size, confirmation before building roads and stations, and an on-screen button for actions that use the Ctrl key. A long press acts as a right click. F-Droid’s description adds two tips: scroll the map with two fingers while building roads or stations, and close dialogs by dragging them to the edge of the screen. It also appears on the Android TV launcher, and a game controller can be used.
What goes online
Single-player needs no connection. The game can browse and download add-ons from OpenTTD’s online content service and join multiplayer servers. OpenTTD 14 also added an anonymous survey; by default the game asks before taking part.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build, compiled from the source code and signed with F-Droid’s key. F-Droid’s recipe removes the Google Play services library, so the port’s cloud-save button presumably doesn’t work in this build.
- It includes OpenGFX 7.1, OpenSFX 1.0.3 and OpenMSX 0.4.2, so nothing needs downloading. OpenTTD is under GPL-2.0, the port framework under LGPL; OpenGFX and OpenMSX are GPL-2.0 and OpenSFX’s sounds CC BY-SA 3.0. F-Droid flags no anti-features.
- OpenTTD’s full Brazilian Portuguese translation is included; the menus the port adds are in English.
- The 76.0 MB file runs on Android 7.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 3 permissions. Our scan found no trackers.

Common questions
Is this APK the official OpenTTD release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled OpenTTD 14.1.rev128 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does OpenTTD need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 14.1.rev128 is built for Android 13 (target API 33). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can OpenTTD access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does OpenTTD contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 14.1.rev128 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is OpenTTD open source?
Yes. OpenTTD is released under the LGPL-2.1-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/n-ice-community/commandergenius.
Can I play online with other players?
OpenTTD has online multiplayer, but this port is based on OpenTTD 14.1 from 2024, and the game only lets you join servers that run the same version as you. The current OpenTTD release is 15.3, so many public servers won’t accept this version. Playing against the computer works offline.
Do I need the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe?
No. The APK includes OpenGFX, OpenSFX and OpenMSX, free replacement graphics, sound effects and music, so the game is complete as installed. OpenTTD can also use the original game’s files, but this port has no Android-specific instructions for adding them.
