Introduction
Audio Recorder is a recording app by Dmytro Ponomarenko. You tap to record from the microphone, watch the waveform while it records, and keep going with the screen off or in another app; recordings can be played back, renamed, bookmarked, shared or moved to a trash.
Formats and settings
- M4A (AAC) and WAV, at sample rates from 8,000 to 48,000 Hz, in mono or stereo. M4A also lets you set the bitrate, from 48 to 288 kbps.
- 3GP, mono only, at 8,000 or 16,000 Hz, for small files.
- Options to split a long recording into a new file at a set length, to build file names from a pattern, to embed an author name in each file’s metadata, and to always use a Bluetooth microphone when one is connected.
- Color themes, a dark theme and a home screen widget.
What’s new
- 2.5.0 (September 2026): recording system audio, meaning what other apps are playing (see below), and a new M4A recorder built on Android’s MediaCodec.
- 2.4.0: a new playback engine with playback speed control, and search in the recordings list.
- 2.3.0: custom name formats, the Bluetooth microphone option, and Arabic with right-to-left layout.
System audio
On Android 10 and later you can switch the source from the microphone to System Audio. The app then captures sound through Android’s playback-capture feature, and asks for your permission to capture the screen when you start recording; the app says it records “what other apps are playing instead of the microphone”. The project notes that apps can refuse to be recorded, “so protected content and calls stay silent”, and that only media and game audio can be captured. It doesn’t work with 3GP.
What goes online
Nothing. The app doesn’t request internet access, and its source contains no network, analytics or crash-reporting library; the analytics hook in the code is an empty placeholder. Our scan found no trackers. The network-state permission it declares comes from the AndroidX Media3 playback library.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 2.5.0, compiled from the source code and signed with F-Droid’s key. The developer also publishes a signed APK on GitHub and sells optional extras through in-app purchases in the Google Play version; neither can update this copy, or be updated by it, without uninstalling first.
- The code is under the Apache 2.0 licence. The Brazilian Portuguese translation is essentially complete.
- The 4.3 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 14 permissions, including the microphone, and the foreground services for recording and for capturing other apps’ audio.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Audio Recorder release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Audio Recorder 2.5.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Audio Recorder need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 2.5.0 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Audio Recorder access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 14 permissions, and 4 of them need your approval first.
Does Audio Recorder contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 2.5.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Audio Recorder open source?
Yes. Audio Recorder is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/Dimowner/AudioRecorder.
Can it record what other apps are playing?
Yes, since version 2.5.0, on Android 10 and later. Choose System Audio as the source and allow screen capture when Android asks: the app uses Android’s playback-capture feature, which runs under that permission. Apps can refuse to be recorded, and only media and game audio can be captured, so protected content and calls come out silent. It isn’t available with the 3GP format.
Where are my recordings saved?
In the app’s own folder on the phone’s storage (Android/data/com.dimowner.audiorecorder/files/Music). From the app you can copy recordings to the Downloads folder or share them. Android deletes an app’s own folder when you uninstall it, so copy out anything you want to keep first.
