Introduction

Seeker is an unofficial Android client for Soulseek, the peer-to-peer network. It uses a modified Soulseek.NET library to talk to the network’s server and directly to peers. The app can search, maintain wishlist searches, filter results, browse another user’s shared directories, transfer files, join chat rooms and exchange private messages.

It is a client, not a content service. Seeker does not supply a catalogue or decide whether a file is authorised. Search results come from other Soulseek users, and transfers are peer to peer. Copyright and other rules still apply to whatever you download or share.

Downloads, search and sharing defaults

The fixed 3.12.0 source shows several useful defaults:

  • a new install accepts replies from up to 500 users per search—not 500 files—while the Reset to default action sets that limit to 250; search history is remembered;
  • results from users without a free upload slot are hidden by default rather than merely ranked lower;
  • downloads that failed because the peer was offline retry when that user comes back online; other failures do not get the same automatic retry;
  • sharing is off until you add a folder and switch it on;
  • the listener uses port 33939 and UPnP is enabled at startup independently of sharing; on Wi-Fi it requests and renews a router mapping, and both listening and UPnP can be disabled;
  • the background service starts with the app, upload concurrency defaults to three, and sharing over mobile data remains allowed unless you change it;
  • download concurrency has no app-set limit by default, and upload/download speed limits start disabled.

There is also an option to require a VPN before shared files are made available. That is an additional guard, not a VPN built into Seeker. Android still permits only one VPN app at a time.

Storage and network access

Seeker needs a username and password for Soulseek. The protocol does not encrypt the login request: the username and password are sent in plaintext to the Soulseek server, so do not reuse that password elsewhere. It connects to Soulseek’s non-free network, which is why IzzyOnDroid labels it NonFreeNet. It can also accept incoming peer connections; whether those work depends on the router, carrier NAT, firewall and UPnP or manual port forwarding.

The normal download and sharing flow uses Android’s system folder picker. Manage-all-files access must be granted manually in system settings and is used as a fallback when the picker is unavailable or when the user selects Force filesystem permissions; media-audio access is requested while adding a shared directory. Broad access gives the app more storage visibility, so grant it only if needed, add only folders you intend to share and review the sharing screen before leaving the service running.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Seeker release?

Yes. It is the developer’s own release of Seeker 3.12.0, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 73345e7d43feb55939450de4497d64c001d2ae764265b69c2cbf3ea03677a8a2).

What Android version does Seeker need?

Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 3.12.0 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can Seeker access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 13 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.

Does Seeker contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 3.12.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Seeker open source?

Yes. Seeker is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/jackBonadies/SeekerAndroid.

Does Seeker include music or other files?

No. It is a client for the Soulseek network. Search results and transfers come from other users, not from Seeker or this site. Only download and share material you are allowed to use.

Does installing Seeker make my files public?

Not by default: sharing stays off until you choose a folder and enable it. However, listening and UPnP start enabled independently of sharing; on Wi-Fi the app immediately asks the router to map TCP port 33939 and keeps renewing it. You can disable UPnP or listening in settings.

Why does Seeker ask for broad file access?

The normal flow uses Android’s folder picker. Manage-all-files access is a manually granted fallback for devices without that picker or when you choose Force filesystem permissions; audio access is requested when adding a shared folder. If you grant broad access, keep sharing folders narrow.
