Introduction
OsmAnd is a map and navigation app built on OpenStreetMap that works without an internet connection. You download the map regions you need in advance, then search, plan routes and navigate offline. That suits hiking, cycling, off-road driving and travel where mobile data is patchy or expensive.
What it does
From the app’s description:
- Offline navigation with profiles for car, motorcycle, bicycle, 4x4, walking, boat and public transport. You can avoid particular roads or surfaces.
- Map styles for touring, hiking (topographic), winter and ski, nautical use, desert and off-road, with optional relief shading and contour lines.
- Route planning and GPX tracks: plot routes point by point, record your trips, import tracks and follow them, and see climbs and descents.
- Search by address, name, coordinates or category, plus favourites, markers and audio or video notes.
- OpenStreetMap editing from the app.
OsmAnd~, OsmAnd and OsmAnd+
OsmAnd comes in several builds:
| Build | Where | Package name |
|---|---|---|
| OsmAnd | Google Play, free | net.osmand |
| OsmAnd+ | Google Play, paid | net.osmand.plus |
| OsmAnd~ (this file) | F-Droid, built from source | net.osmand.plus |
OsmAnd’s own README links to F-Droid as one of its official download channels. F-Droid’s build uses the package name of the paid OsmAnd+, with Google’s billing and in-app purchases removed, along with other Google and proprietary components such as Google’s location service. F-Droid’s description of this build lists the Maps+ extras, including unlimited map downloads, contour lines, nautical depths and offline Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. OsmAnd doesn’t document exactly which paid features this build includes, so check in the app if a particular one matters to you.
Because OsmAnd~ and OsmAnd+ share a package name but are signed differently, one won’t install over the other. Back up your favourites and tracks before switching.
Good to know
- It’s big. The app is 162.2 MB for 64-bit ARM, and map regions come on top.
- F-Droid flags it NonFreeAssets (some artwork and voices are under a non-commercial licence), NonFreeNet (it can download from non-free online services) and Tracking: F-Droid notes that a unique installation ID is sent with map download requests.
- This is the latest stable OsmAnd~, 5.3.10. F-Droid also carries a 5.4 beta.

Common questions
Is this APK the official OsmAnd~ release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled OsmAnd~ 5.3.10 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does OsmAnd~ need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 5.3.10 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can OsmAnd~ access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 27 permissions, and 8 of them need your approval first.
Does OsmAnd~ contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 5.3.10 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is OsmAnd~ open source?
Yes. OsmAnd~ is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand.
