Introduction
Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server: you run it on your own computer or NAS, and it serves your films, series and music to your devices. This app is its official Android client. You need a Jellyfin server for it to do anything; the project says plainly that it doesn’t run servers for users.
How it works
The app wraps Jellyfin’s own web interface, so it looks and works like Jellyfin in a browser. For video it uses a native player, the default since version 2.7, based on Google’s ExoPlayer with FFmpeg decoders; the project says this plays more formats and reduces the need for the server to transcode. You can also hand playback to another app, such as VLC or MX Player.
Features
- Downloads, which since 2.7 you can browse and play inside the app.
- Android Auto for music, and audiobooks, while online.
- Live TV, if your server has the extra hardware or services for it.
This is the libre build
Jellyfin publishes two builds. The proprietary one, on Google Play, adds Chromecast support through Google’s libraries. This file is the libre build, without Chromecast; F-Droid’s and IzzyOnDroid’s descriptions still mention casting, but it isn’t in this version. The file is byte for byte the libre release from Jellyfin’s GitHub and carries Jellyfin’s own signature, the same key F-Droid publishes it with.
Good to know
- Version 2.7 is the last line to support Android 5.0 and 5.1.
- The 9.0 MB file runs on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 12 permissions.
