Introduction

Kodi is a free, open-source media player and entertainment hub, built around a “10-foot” interface meant for a television and a remote control. On Android it is aimed first at TV boxes and sticks; the project says phones and tablets have more limited support.

Your media, not content

Kodi plays the videos, music, photos and other media you already have, on the device itself, on USB storage, or on network shares over SMB, NFS, FTP or WebDAV, and organises them into libraries. Kodi doesn’t come with any content. The project states that it provides no media or sources, and that it doesn’t support pirated or illegally sourced material.

The official add-on repository

Kodi comes with its official repository switched on. It is curated by Team Kodi: add-ons there must be free and legal to distribute, must not break copyright law, and may not get around paywalls. It offers skins, web interfaces for controlling Kodi remotely, and add-ons for music, video and more. The project calls its official repository the only trusted one.

Live TV also works through that repository: PVR client add-ons connect Kodi to a TV server you run, such as Tvheadend, MythTV or NextPVR. Kodi has no TV tuner of its own.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of Kodi 21.3 “Omega”, signed with F-Droid’s key. It won’t install over Kodi from kodi.tv or Google Play without uninstalling first, and Kodi’s own guide warns that uninstalling loses your settings.
  • Google Play is still on 21.2: Kodi says a new Play requirement has kept it from uploading 21.3 there.
  • It is much bigger than Kodi’s own APK because F-Droid’s build bundles more add-ons: we counted 34 screensaver add-ons, which together make up more than half of the 181.8 MB file. It doesn’t bundle the joystick support add-on that Kodi’s own build includes.
  • It is the 64-bit ARM build and needs Android 5.0 or later, so it won’t install on a TV box with a 32-bit system; Kodi’s own download site has a 32-bit ARM build for those. See how to install APKs on Android TV. Kodi 22 is in beta, and will need Android 7.0.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Kodi release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Kodi 21.3 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Kodi need?

Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 21.3 is built for Android 14 (target API 34). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can Kodi access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 10 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Kodi contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 21.3 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Kodi open source?

Yes. Kodi is released under the GPL-2.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc.
