Introduction

Tailscale builds a private network between your devices, which it calls a tailnet, on top of WireGuard. Devices talk to each other peer to peer. Tailscale’s coordination service handles the rest: finding devices, signing in, distributing keys and applying access rules.

Signing in

Tailscale doesn’t keep passwords itself. You sign in through an identity provider: on Android, your Google account or another supported single sign-on provider.

Using your own server

The app can also connect to Headscale, an open-source, self-hosted replacement for Tailscale’s coordination server. Choose Use an alternate server when signing in and enter your server’s address; both Headscale’s and Tailscale’s documentation describe this.

Why F-Droid flags tracking

F-Droid flags this build for tracking because the app sends debug logs to Tailscale’s servers without asking. Tailscale’s own documentation says its clients stream logs to a central log server, and describes a way to opt out on Windows, macOS and Linux, but not on Android.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of version 1.102.4, signed with F-Droid’s key. Tailscale’s README notes that F-Droid builds aren’t released, updated or verified by the Tailscale team.
  • The Google Play version comes from Tailscale itself. The two are signed differently, so they don’t update each other.
  • The 105.5 MB file has native code for ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 12 permissions.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Tailscale release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Tailscale 1.102.4-t3caf7d9e7-g8fbef364a from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Tailscale need?

Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 1.102.4-t3caf7d9e7-g8fbef364a is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can Tailscale access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 12 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Tailscale contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.102.4-t3caf7d9e7-g8fbef364a found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Tailscale open source?

Yes. Tailscale is released under the BSD-3-Clause licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale-android.
