Introduction
Ungoogled Chromium is a version of Chromium, the open-source browser Google Chrome is built from, with Google’s web services removed. The project states its aims in order: “ungoogled-chromium is Google Chromium, sans dependency on Google web services”, and “ungoogled-chromium retains the default Chromium experience as closely as possible.” Its privacy tweaks are mostly off: “almost all of these features must be manually activated or enabled.” This is the Android version, a separate project under the same ungoogled-software organisation on GitHub.
What it removes and changes
From the Android project’s list and the build settings of this version:
- Google’s services and libraries. In the README’s words: “All Google play and Google service related blobs are removed. This includes Firebase, GCM (Google Cloud Messaging), GMS (Google Mobile Services) and bridge to Google Play.” Google’s web addresses in the browser code are replaced with addresses that don’t exist. Our scan found no tracking libraries.
- Safe Browsing is compiled out, “along with its lookups”. The browser doesn’t check pages or downloads against Google’s list of dangerous sites, so that protection is gone.
- Usage statistics, field trials and variation downloads are disabled, as is autofill’s communication with Google’s servers.
- WebRTC is off, so video calls and screen sharing in the browser don’t work until you turn it back on (see the questions below). WebGL stays on.
- Encrypted DNS is set to automatic: it is used where your DNS provider supports it.
- Extras taken from other Chromium forks: an Exit item in the menu, bookmark import and export, a proxy setting, an always-incognito mode, a flag to clear browsing data when you exit, and stricter site isolation.
The project is clear about what it isn’t: its enhancements “are not to be considered useful for journalists, people living in countries with freedom limitations, and those who are facing government-level adversaries”.
Who makes it
The Android version was dormant from 2022, when its previous maintainer released version 99, until July 2026, when a volunteer took it over; ungoogled-software’s maintainers review the changes and publish the releases. Since then a new version has come out every week or two, following Chromium. The new maintainer has written: “I’ll try my best to stay consistent with updates, but there may be some gaps between since I may not have the time.” A browser that falls behind Chromium misses security fixes, so check the releases page now and then.
About this file
- This is the official GitHub release 155.0.8059.39-1, from 15 October 2026, built on Chromium 155.0.8059.39. Its changelog lists the Chromium update, new SystemWebView builds, fixes for a crash when opening bookmarks and for the missing Exit menu item, and “Disabled Gemini (Ask Gemini button)”.
- It was built by GitHub’s own build servers from the public source at that release, which GitHub’s build attestation for this exact file confirms, and is signed with the project’s release key (certificate “O=ungoogled-software”, SHA-256 08:B8:74:08…1D:2F:87). The project doesn’t publish that fingerprint outside its public build logs, where every 2026 release shows the same one.
- The package name is org.ungoogled.chromium.stable, so it installs next to Chrome and other Chromium browsers. It isn’t on Google Play.
- The 364.9 MB file is the 64-bit ARM build and needs Android 10 or later; the project also makes a 32-bit ARM build, and no x86 one. It declares 55 permissions, among them location, camera and microphone for sites that ask, and two left over from Google’s push messaging, whose code is removed.
- The Android project is licensed under the GPL-3.0; Chromium itself is under a BSD licence with many third-party components. The app isn’t made or endorsed by Google.
- The interface is translated into Brazilian Portuguese, from Chromium’s own translations.
- There are no official screenshots, so this page has none.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Ungoogled Chromium release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s 155.0.8059.39-1 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked Ungoogled Chromium (SHA-256 08b8740845f4354ddca77e5b31fe40dbd69645575b77deef2344d064c61d2f87); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does Ungoogled Chromium need?
Android 10 or later (API level 29). Version 155.0.8059.39 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can Ungoogled Chromium access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 55 permissions, and 11 of them need your approval first.
Does Ungoogled Chromium contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 155.0.8059.39 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Ungoogled Chromium open source?
Yes. Ungoogled Chromium is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium-android.
Does it update itself?
No. The Android project applies no updater and publishes no F-Droid repository, so you download each new version from its GitHub releases yourself. Versions since September 2026 are signed with the same key as this file and install over it.
Can I update from an older Ungoogled Chromium?
Not from the builds made before 2026. The project changed hands, and its changelog warns: “apk signatures are changed as future updates will be done by a new maintainer using a different keystore.” Uninstall the old version first; its data goes with it.
Can I use extensions?
Yes. Support for extensions was added in version 152 and is switched on by default in this build. The project’s README still says the extension version was discontinued, which is out of date.
Why don’t video calls work?
WebRTC, which sites use for calls and screen sharing, is turned off by default; creating a connection fails with “RTCPeerConnection creations are prohibited in this browser.” You can turn it back on with the disable-peerconnection flag on the chrome://flags page.
