Introduction
OpenVPN for Android is a port of OpenVPN that uses Android’s VPN service, so it needs no root. It is a client only: you need a working OpenVPN profile (an .ovpn file) from your VPN provider, your organisation or your own server.
Not the same as OpenVPN Connect
There are two well-known OpenVPN apps, and the project’s FAQ explains the difference:
| OpenVPN for Android (this file) | OpenVPN Connect | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Arne Schwabe | OpenVPN Inc. |
| Source code | Open source | Closed source |
| Based on | OpenVPN 2.x | OpenVPN’s C++ reimplementation |
| Aimed at | More advanced users | Everyone |
The FAQ calls this one the semi-official client of the OpenVPN community. Both read standard .ovpn profiles.
Features worth knowing
- Per-app rules: choose which apps use the tunnel, and let local network traffic bypass it.
- Automation: other apps can connect, disconnect, pause and resume it, and there is an API for developers.
- Managed configuration for companies that deploy it through device management.
Limits
- TAP mode isn’t possible with Android’s non-root VPN API; only TUN-style connections work.
- Devices you connect through the phone’s hotspot don’t go through the VPN.
- For a reliable kill switch, the FAQ recommends Android’s own Block connections without VPN setting.
Why we don’t host 0.7.66
The developer’s release notes for 0.7.66 say “DO NOT USE THIS RELEASE”. A build optimisation turned on in that version broke OpenVPN 3 connections and profile loading, and people who updated found their existing profiles gone. On Google Play it only reached beta testers before the developer paused it; F-Droid still offered it when we checked. A few days later, version 0.7.68 came out to fix the missing profiles. This page skips 0.7.66: until F-Droid publishes a newer release, the file here is the one before it, and after that it is the newest release.
About this file
The developer describes the app as a personal project that tracks the latest versions of OpenSSL, OpenVPN 2.x and OpenVPN 3.x, shipping the master branches of both OpenVPN versions, and says stable or long-term-support versions were never the focus. This copy is F-Droid’s build, signed with F-Droid’s key. Google Play has the same app from the same developer, but signed differently, so the two can’t update each other without uninstalling first.

Common questions
Is this APK the official OpenVPN for Android release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled OpenVPN for Android 0.7.65 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does OpenVPN for Android need?
Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 0.7.65 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can OpenVPN for Android access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 10 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does OpenVPN for Android contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.7.65 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is OpenVPN for Android open source?
Yes. OpenVPN for Android is released under the GPL-2.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/schwabe/ics-openvpn.
My VPN profiles disappeared after updating to 0.7.66. What now?
Don’t go back to an older version: the developer says the app drops profiles it can’t read, so downgrading won’t show them again. Version 0.7.68 was released to fix the missing profiles; update to it from the same place you got 0.7.66 once it’s available there. The bug came from a build optimisation in 0.7.66, and its release notes now say “DO NOT USE THIS RELEASE” (ics-openvpn issue #1931).
