Introduction
PPSSPP runs games made for Sony’s PSP. It is a high-level emulator: it simulates the PSP’s system software itself, so unlike many emulators it needs no BIOS or firmware file.
Games are not included
The developer is clear that PPSSPP can’t come with games. You need your own PSP games as ISO or CSO files, dumped from discs you own.
Features
From the project’s site:
- Save states: save and restore anywhere in a game.
- Better graphics than the original hardware, with texture scaling and anisotropic filtering.
- Controls: customisable touch controls, or a gamepad or keyboard.
- RetroAchievements support, since version 1.16.
- Graphics through Vulkan, which the project recommends where the phone supports it, or OpenGL as the compatibility option.
Permissions
The APK declares ten permissions, including location, camera and microphone. They exist for the few PSP games that used the console’s GPS, camera or microphone accessories: PPSSPP asks for them only when a game tries to use one.
PPSSPP, PPSSPP Gold and this file
- PPSSPP Gold on Google Play is the paid version. The developer says it works the same as the free one; buying it supports development. It is a separate app, so it installs alongside the free one.
- This file is F-Droid’s build of the free version, signed with F-Droid’s key. It won’t update a PPSSPP installed from Google Play or the PPSSPP website: uninstall that first, and back up your save games before you do.
- F-Droid builds it without a proprietary library for Moga controllers, so Moga’s own controller mode is presumably unavailable; ordinary Bluetooth gamepads shouldn’t be affected.
- This is version 1.19.3. PPSSPP’s website and Google Play have newer releases, the 1.20 series, which F-Droid hasn’t published.

Common questions
Is this APK the official PPSSPP release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled PPSSPP 1.19.3 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does PPSSPP need?
Android 2.3 or later (API level 9). Version 1.19.3 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can PPSSPP access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 10 permissions, and 6 of them need your approval first.
Does PPSSPP contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.19.3 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is PPSSPP open source?
Yes. PPSSPP is released under the GPL-2.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/hrydgard/ppsspp.
