Introduction

Snes9x EX+ is a Super Nintendo emulator by Robert Broglia, who makes the EX series of emulators for Android. From his website: “Snes9x EX is a SNES/Super Famicom emulator based on Snes9x. There are two versions, a faster a less accurate build based on Snes9x 1.43, and Snes9x EX+ based on the lastest Snes9x code.” This is EX+, the one based on current Snes9x.

What it does

  • Game files with the .smc and .sfc extensions, also from ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives.
  • Controls: on-screen buttons you can adjust, and Bluetooth or USB gamepads and keyboards; the store description names Xbox and PS4 controllers. It also emulates the Super Scope and Justifier light guns and the mouse.
  • Save states, including automatic saves on a timer, rewind, fast-forward and cheats in the .cht format.
  • Android TV: it has a TV launcher entry.

What you need

Your own SNES game files; this site doesn’t provide them. Ordinary games need no BIOS. The Satellaview (BS-X) and Sufami Turbo add-ons each need their own BIOS file, which you set in the app’s options.

Offline

The app declares no internet permission, so it can’t download anything, show ads or send data. Its permissions are storage (for your game files on older Android versions), Bluetooth for gamepads, vibration and adding home-screen shortcuts for games.

The licence

Snes9x isn’t under an open-source licence. Its terms allow anyone “to use, copy, modify and distribute Snes9x in both binary and source form, for non-commercial purposes”, “providing that this license information and copyright notice appear with all copies”. The rest of the EX code is under the GPL-3.0, with an exception that lets it be combined with Snes9x. The APK doesn’t carry those terms, so a copy of Snes9x’s licence and copyright notice, as published with 1.5.81, sits next to the download here. Its terms rule out commercial use.

About this file

  • This is the developer’s own release of version 1.5.81, from April 2024: the APK his download page on explusalpha.com links to, which is stored in a Google Drive folder. The developer publishes no checksum or certificate fingerprint for it. We recorded its signer, a certificate issued to Robert Broglia, on our first download and require the same one for every update.
  • Newer versions are on Google Play only. The test builds on the project’s GitHub page are automatic builds signed with a different, debug key, so they won’t install over this one.
  • The 5.9 MB file runs on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit. Our scan found no trackers.
  • Neither the developer’s site nor its source repository has screenshots of the app, and we don’t show other people’s game footage, so this page has none.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Snes9x EX+ release?

Yes. It is the file explusalpha.com offers for download, byte for byte. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked Snes9x EX+ (SHA-256 af1bdc5b051ee92674bb0eec7e3418117bcd4a98ceada135984d2fbd87498b27); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.

What Android version does Snes9x EX+ need?

Android 2.3 or later (API level 9). Version 1.5.81 is built for Android 14 (target API 34). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can Snes9x EX+ access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 6 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Snes9x EX+ contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.5.81 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Snes9x EX+ open source?

No. Its source code is published at https://github.com/Rakashazi/emu-ex-plus-alpha, but under the Snes9x License, which isn’t an open-source licence. The APK includes Bio Worm, a 1995 homebrew game by Mitsuru Kamiyama that circulated as freeware, without a licence of its own.

Does it come with any games?

One: Bio Worm, a small homebrew game. Its file says “(c)1995 Mitsuru Kamiyama/KAMI”; it circulated as freeware in the 1990s and has no licence of its own. Every other game you load yourself, from files you own.

Why is this older than the Google Play version?

The download page on explusalpha.com links to a Google Drive folder whose newest Snes9x EX+ APK is 1.5.81, from April 2024; later versions have come out on Google Play only. We can’t check Play’s signing key, so we can’t say whether the Play version will install over this file.

Do I need a BIOS?

Not for ordinary cartridge games. Only two add-ons need one: the Satellaview (BS-X) and the Sufami Turbo, whose BIOS files the app asks you to set in its options. This site doesn’t provide them.

Which game files does it open?

SNES game files with the .smc and .sfc extensions, according to its store description, either on their own or inside ZIP, RAR or 7Z archives. Cheats use the .cht format.
