Introduction
KOReader is a document viewer made first for e-ink readers such as Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook; it also runs on desktop Linux and Android. On Android it looks and behaves as it does on an e-reader: no animations, paginated menus and adjustable text contrast.
What it reads
Fixed-layout formats such as PDF, DjVu, CBT and CBZ, and reflowable e-books such as EPUB, FB2, MOBI, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM and TXT. Scanned PDFs and DjVu files can be reflowed into readable text with the built-in K2pdfopt library.
Features
From the project’s README and user guide:
- Dictionaries in StarDict format, and Wikipedia lookups.
- OPDS catalogs and RSS feeds; version 2026.07 added basic OPDS 2.0 support.
- Calibre integration: search metadata, receive books wirelessly and browse your library.
- Highlights and notes, exported to files or to the note-taking app Joplin.
- Progress sync between KOReader devices; the project says it doesn’t send file names or content to the sync server.
This is the F-Droid package
- KOReader’s own APK from GitHub uses the package name
org.koreader.launcher; F-Droid’s build usesorg.koreader.launcher.fdroid. They are separate apps and can be installed side by side. - This build can’t update itself from inside the app, unlike the GitHub one, and it can’t run shell scripts; get updates here or from F-Droid.
- KOReader isn’t on Google Play.
- This file is version 2026.07.1, a bug-fix release from August 2026, signed with F-Droid’s key. It’s the 64-bit ARM build, 30.1 MB, and declares seven permissions.

Common questions
Is this APK the official KOReader release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled KOReader v2026.07.1 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does KOReader need?
Android 4.3 or later (API level 18). Version v2026.07.1 is built for Android 11 (target API 30). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can KOReader access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 7 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does KOReader contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version v2026.07.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is KOReader open source?
Yes. KOReader is released under the AGPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/koreader/koreader.
