Introduction
Mihon is an open-source reader for manga, webtoons and comics. It continues the code of Tachiyomi, which stopped development in January 2024; its developers cited “Kakao Entertainment Corp’s threats” and wrote that anything new “claiming to be its successor” has “no relation to the original developers”. Mihon’s first release came three days later, and Mihon calls Tachiyomi its predecessor. Its README states that the app “hosts zero content”.
What it does by itself
- Reads your own files: folders of images, and ZIP or CBZ, RAR or CBR and EPUB archives, from a
localfolder inside the storage location you choose. The documentation says folders and ZIP or CBZ files perform best. It reads pictures, not text. - A reader with several modes: paged left to right, right to left or vertically, and long strip with or without gaps, set per series or as a default.
- A library with categories, reading history, and an updates tab with a calendar of upcoming chapters. Checking the library for new chapters on a schedule is off until you set an interval.
- Tracking: it records your progress on MyAnimeList, AniList, Kitsu, MangaUpdates, Shikimori, Bangumi, Hikka, MangaBaka and, since 0.21, Comick, after you log in, and on the self-hosted servers Komga, Kavita and Suwayomi. The guide notes that tracking is one-way, from Mihon to the tracker.
- Backups of your library, history, categories and settings, every 12 hours by default, which also restore Tachiyomi backups. Downloaded chapters and custom covers aren’t included.
- An app lock with your screen lock or fingerprint, and light and dark themes.
Extensions
Mihon contains no sources and comes with no extension store. Content sources are separate apps, called extensions, which you install from a store whose address you add yourself; its documentation says the project “will not provide resources for any unofficial repositories”. Before an extension is trusted, the app warns: “Malicious extensions can read any stored login credentials or execute arbitrary code.” We don’t link to any store or extension.
Extensions are installed like other apps. Mihon can also install them through Shizuku, without a confirmation for each one.
What goes online
From the 0.21.3 source code:
- An update check when you open the app, and again every six hours while it stays open, asking GitHub for the latest release. There is no setting to turn it off; a maintainer’s reply to that request was that they “don’t want people stuck on broken old ones indefinitely”. Since 0.21 you can skip a particular version when it is offered. Updates are only downloaded if you tap to.
- Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, in this standard build. Both are on by default and only start if Google Play services, or microG, is on the phone. You can turn them off in the first-run setup or later under Settings › Security and privacy › Analytics and Crash logs. Mihon’s privacy policy says both collect anonymised data. That is why our scan lists two trackers.
- Nothing else until you act: tracking sites after you log in, and extension stores and sources after you add them.
About this file
- This is the standard build of version 0.21.3, released on 25 October 2026 UTC (26 October in Hong Kong), byte for byte the universal APK (
mihon-v0.21.3.apk) on the project’s GitHub, signed by AntsyLich, one of its maintainers. It updates an existing Mihon installed from GitHub or the project’s website, and Mihon’s own update prompts keep working afterwards. - The FOSS build without Firebase installs as a separate app (
app.mihon.foss); we don’t host it. - Mihon isn’t on Google Play by choice: “APK-based extensions conflict with Google Play’s content policy.” It isn’t on F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid either.
- Back up before updating from 0.20. On the first start, 0.21 merges duplicate entries and chapters left over from older versions, and the release notes warn that this “can’t be undone”. 0.21 also adds Comick tracking, a reader option to load pages ahead only on Wi-Fi, and much faster screens for big libraries; 0.21.1, a day later, fixes updates from 0.20 that could take hours on libraries with many duplicates, and 0.21.2 updates from 0.20 that failed on some older databases and left the app stuck on the updating screen or crashing at start, along with Kitsu login and several crashes.
- New in 0.21.3: a 12- or 24-hour time-format setting; redaction of sensitive login headers in logs, on by default; faster, lower-memory backups; and library updates that begin with the sources holding the most entries. It also fixes a WebView header leak between sites, WebView crashes from an Origin header, several download and extension-installer display problems, and updates OkHttp to reject the compromised eMudhra certificates on devices without Google Play services. The Split tall images download setting was removed.
- Last version for Tachiyomi backups. The release notes say 0.21 is the last major version that restores Tachiyomi’s backup format and works with extensions made for Tachiyomi.
- The 68.2 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later, on ARM and x86, and declares 19 permissions. Among them: installing and removing apps and seeing all installed apps, which it uses to manage extensions; notifications; and running in the background for library updates, downloads and backups. It asks for no camera, location, contacts or microphone access.
- Mihon is licensed under the Apache-2.0. The source of this version is at https://github.com/mihonapp/mihon/tree/v0.21.3. We aren’t affiliated with the project.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Mihon release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s v0.21.3 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked Mihon (SHA-256 9add655a78e96c4ec7a53ef89dccb557cb5d767489fac5e785d671a5a75d4da2); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does Mihon need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 0.21.3 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Mihon access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 19 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.
Does Mihon contain trackers?
Yes. Version 0.21.3 contains code from Google CrashLytics and Google Firebase Analytics, which match Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.
Is Mihon open source?
Yes. Mihon is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/mihonapp/mihon.
Does Mihon come with manga?
No. Its FAQ: “Mihon does not have, associate, or provide any repositories or extensions”, and “Mihon is bring-your-own-content and does not offer anything.” Out of the box it reads files you put in its local folder: folders of images, ZIP or CBZ, RAR or CBR, and EPUB archives.
Should I use the standard or the FOSS build?
This is the standard build, which the developers recommend “for most users”. It includes Google’s Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, which you can turn off. The FOSS build has neither, but it is a separate app with its own package name, so it doesn’t update or replace this one; moving between them means a backup and restore.
Can I bring my Tachiyomi library over?
Yes, with this version. Mihon restores Tachiyomi backup files (.tachibk). The 0.21 release notes say it is the last major version that can, so after the next one a Tachiyomi backup has to be restored on 0.21 first and the app updated afterwards. For downloaded chapters, choose your existing Tachiyomi folder as Mihon’s storage location.
Can it read light novels?
No. The FAQ: “Mihon can’t read light novels; it’s an image parser, not a text parser.” EPUB files are shown as pictures, so for text books an e-book reader is the better choice.
