Introduction

Nextcloud is open-source software for running your own cloud: file storage and sharing, calendars, contacts and more, on a server you control or with a provider that hosts it for you. This is its official Android app for files. It needs an account on a Nextcloud server, version 22 or later; the first screen links to providers that offer accounts and to instructions for running your own server.

What it does

  • Browse, open, upload and share files and folders, on one account or several.
  • Auto upload for new photos and videos, with options to upload only on Wi-Fi, only while charging, and to delete the phone’s copy afterwards.
  • Work offline: changes you make without a connection are queued and synced when you are back online.
  • Two-way sync for folders you choose, switched on in each folder’s details. By default it runs every 15 minutes, on Wi-Fi and with power saving off, and it covers only the copies inside the app’s own Nextcloud folder: changes made to files elsewhere on the phone aren’t picked up.
  • End-to-end encryption for empty folders, if your server has it switched on, with a 12-word phrase that opens them on your other devices.
  • Protection and backup: lock the app with a passcode or your phone’s screen lock, and back up your contacts and calendars to the server.

Version 35 adds albums, a new media player and, for Nextcloud 35 servers, a new sharing screen. Syncing calendars and contacts with the server goes through DAVx⁵, a separate app; Nextcloud Talk, Notes and Deck are separate apps too.

What this F-Droid build leaves out

  • Push notifications. They depend on Google Play services, so Nextcloud’s README says the F-Droid builds don’t support them.
  • The built-in document scanner. If the FairScan app is installed, the scan option hands over to it; otherwise the option doesn’t appear.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of Nextcloud 35.0.0, from September 2026, signed with F-Droid’s key. It won’t update the version from Google Play, or the other way round, without uninstalling first.
  • It is for 64-bit phones only: Nextcloud builds this version for 64-bit ARM and x86_64, with no 32-bit version.
  • The 96.8 MB file runs on Android 9 and later and declares 33 permissions, among them contacts and calendar access for the backup feature.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Nextcloud release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Nextcloud 35.0.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Nextcloud need?

Android 9 or later (API level 28). Version 35.0.0 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can Nextcloud access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 33 permissions, and 12 of them need your approval first.

Does Nextcloud contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 35.0.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Nextcloud open source?

Yes. Nextcloud is released under the GPL-2.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/nextcloud/android.
