Introduction
Open Camera is an open-source camera app by Mark Harman that exposes the manual controls of Android’s camera system. It doesn’t even ask for internet access: the eight permissions it declares don’t include it, so nothing you shoot can be sent anywhere by the app.
What it does
From the project’s website:
- Manual controls through Android’s Camera2 API, with optional focus assist, plus burst mode, RAW (DNG) files, camera vendor extensions, slow-motion video and log-profile video.
- HDR, with automatic alignment and ghost removal, and exposure bracketing.
- Noise reduction, including a low-light night mode, and dynamic range optimisation.
- Focus bracketing.
- Stamps: date and time, location and your own text on photos, with date, time and location saved as subtitles in videos.
- Optional geotagging of photos and videos.
Depends on your phone
Many of these features rely on the phone’s camera hardware. The Camera2 features need a phone that reports LIMITED or FULL support for the Camera2 API; LEGACY-only phones don’t get them, and the help page notes that some phones support Camera2 poorly. Noise reduction and focus bracketing are only available on some devices. Bluetooth remote control needs Android 12.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 1.56.2, from May 2026, signed with F-Droid’s key. The author says the app itself has no ads.
- Google Play has Open Camera from the same author, signed differently, so the two don’t update each other.
- The 5.0 MB file has no native code, needs Android 6.0 or later, and asks for the camera, microphone, location and Bluetooth permissions, the last two for geotagging and remote control.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Open Camera release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Open Camera 1.56.2 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Open Camera need?
Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 1.56.2 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.
Can Open Camera access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 8 permissions, and 7 of them need your approval first.
Does Open Camera contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.56.2 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Open Camera open source?
Yes. Open Camera is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://sourceforge.net/p/opencamera/code.
