Introduction
Spotube describes itself as an extensible, open-source music streaming platform. Everything it plays comes through plugins: one kind supplies song information and playlists, another supplies the audio.
What it uses out of the box
Two plugins ship inside the app and load automatically:
- MusicBrainz and ListenBrainz supply the song, album and artist information. Signing in to ListenBrainz is optional and lets it record what you listen to.
- A YouTube audio plugin finds each track on YouTube and streams its audio. On Android it uses the NewPipe extractor to do that by default.
Features
From the project’s README:
- Downloads, saved with the track’s metadata.
- Time-synced lyrics, whatever the plugins provide.
- Playback controlled on the device itself.
- No telemetry, diagnostics or collection of user data, according to the project. Our scan found no tracker SDKs.
About other plugins
The app can install more plugins, which it finds on GitHub and Codeberg. That list isn’t curated: the project warns that a malicious plugin given full access could steal your credentials, and says it takes no responsibility for third-party plugins. Only add plugins you trust.
No longer a Spotify client
Spotube used to get its music information from Spotify. In 2025 its developer received a cease-and-desist letter from Spotify, and version 5 removed Spotify from the app; the project says it had been in a non-working state for a long time because of legal and other issues. Today there is no Spotify sign-in, and the app isn’t made by or connected with Spotify.
Good to know
- It isn’t on Google Play. An app called “Spotube – Offline Music Player” on Google Play comes from a different developer.
- This file is F-Droid’s build, with its update check switched off. It covers 32- and 64-bit ARM and x86_64 in one 128.6 MB file. It is signed with F-Droid’s key, so it won’t install over the developer’s own APK from GitHub, or the other way round, without uninstalling first.
- F-Droid flags it NonFreeNet. Its stated reason still mentions Spotify, which this version no longer uses; the YouTube audio source is presumably why the flag still applies.
- One unusual permission, for OPPO phones, comes from a battery-optimisation library: it lets the app open the auto-start settings on OPPO and ColorOS devices. On Android, Spotube asks once for extra battery optimisations to be switched off, so the app can run smoothly.
- Spotube is released under the BSD 4-Clause licence, which asks for this acknowledgement: This product includes software developed by Kingkor Roy Tirtho.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Spotube release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Spotube 5.1.2 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Spotube need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 5.1.2 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Spotube access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 13 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.
Does Spotube contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 5.1.2 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Spotube open source?
Yes. Spotube is released under the BSD-4-Clause licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/KRTirtho/spotube.
