Introduction
SimpMusic is an unofficial client for YouTube Music, for Android and desktop computers. It isn’t made by Google or YouTube, and the project’s website says it isn’t affiliated with them. Its README still describes it as beta software that may have bugs.
What it does
From the project’s README:
- Synced lyrics from several sources: SimpMusic’s own lyrics service, LRCLIB, YouTube transcripts, and Spotify if you sign in to it.
- A ten-band equalizer with presets and AutoEq headphone profiles, delay and reverb effects, or Android’s own equalizer instead.
- Offline playback: songs can be cached, or saved as files to your phone’s Download folder.
- A sleep timer, Android Auto, Discord Rich Presence, and support for SponsorBlock and Return YouTube Dislike.
No account needed
The documentation says the app works fully as a guest. One setting worth changing: Content Country defaults to Vietnam, and the documentation suggests setting it to match the catalogue and charts you want.
This is the FOSS build
SimpMusic comes in two builds. This file is the FOSS one, which the project says contains no trackers or third-party data collection; our scan found no tracker SDKs either. It leaves out Google’s Cast SDK, so it can’t cast to a Chromecast, and Last.fm scrobbling, which only the Full build has.
Good to know
- It isn’t on Google Play: its FAQ says Play’s policies conflict with how it streams music. An app called SimpMusic that is on Google Play comes from a different developer.
- The file is for 64-bit ARM phones, is 27.5 MB and needs Android 8.0 or later. It carries the developer’s own signature, the same key F-Droid’s older build of SimpMusic uses.
- It declares 14 permissions, including the camera. In the source code the camera is used by a QR scanner in a login-sync screen, most likely for passing a sign-in between the phone and the desktop app.
