Introduction

VIVI Music (package com.vivi.vivimusic) plays songs from YouTube and YouTube Music in an open-source app of its own. Where other clients focus on features, VIVI’s README puts the design first: the whole interface takes its colors from the album art that is playing, songs can have animated backdrops, and transitions are animated throughout.

What it does

From the project’s README:

  • Streaming from YouTube and YouTube Music, with background playback and notification controls.
  • Downloads and caching for offline listening, with automatic cache management.
  • Word-by-word synced lyrics, karaoke-style.
  • An in-app equalizer.
  • Dynamic Material You colors and animated backdrops for songs.
  • Android Auto support.
  • A built-in updater that installs new versions from inside the app.

Android Auto

If VIVI doesn’t appear in Android Auto, the developer gives these steps:

  1. Open Android Auto on your phone and go to its Settings.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap the version number several times to enable developer settings.
  3. Open the three-dot menu, choose Developer settings, and turn on Unknown sources.
  4. Restart Android Auto and connect to your car again.

Good to know

  • Privacy. The README says the app collects no data and keeps your library, settings and downloads on the phone. Our scan of the APK found no known tracker code.
  • The microphone is optional. The manifest says the microphone is for music recognition and marks it as not required.
  • Runs on almost any phone. This build has native code for 32-bit and 64-bit ARM and for x86, and needs Android 8.0 or later.
  • IzzyOnDroid flags it NonFreeNet, because it depends on YouTube Music.
