Introduction
FreeMiner is an open-source voxel sandbox descended from Minetest, now called Luanti. It combines a heavily updated Luanti engine with FreeMiner’s own default game and Android branding. You can create a local world, gather and place blocks, craft, explore generated terrain and use the included game’s creatures, weather and other mods. Multiplayer and downloadable community content are separate network features.
This page covers F-Droid’s 5.17.0 build. We matched its 138.9 MB APK to F-Droid’s signed index, inspected the fixed engine source and opened the APK’s nested assets.zip, which is roughly twenty megabytes. We confirmed that it contains a complete games/default tree rather than only a bare engine. We did not play a world on a physical phone or test compatibility with public servers.
Included game versus downloadable content
The bundled default game contains its own configuration, textures and many mods. The measured archive includes crafting and inventory code, carts and rails, weather, animals and other creatures, farming and FreeMiner-specific nodes. That is enough to create and play a local world after installation; the app does not require a second game download merely to reach gameplay.
It also retains Luanti’s ContentDB browser at content.luanti.org. ContentDB can install additional games, mods and texture packs and can check their updates. The engine’s Android defaults blacklist packages marked nonfree or unsuitable for Android, but a community listing is not the same as our verification of this APK. Review each downloaded package’s author, licence and permissions separately.
FreeMiner can browse and join public servers. Server rules, moderation, accounts and downloaded media belong to those operators. The internet permission therefore supports real optional features even though single-player worlds can work offline.
Controls, storage and compatibility
Android uses touch controls for movement, looking, jumping, digging, placing and inventory actions. Engine settings expose view range, graphics, sound and input options, so performance varies with world complexity and phone GPU. The four-architecture APK is large because it carries a native engine for ARM and x86 plus the bundled game assets.
Worlds and settings are stored in the application’s data area and exposed through the app’s Android document provider where supported. A world can become incompatible with an older engine or different mod set; keep a copy before changing games, mods or engine versions. No claim is made that Minecraft worlds or proprietary Minecraft servers will work.
The APK declares internet, notifications and Android’s generated dynamic-receiver permission. Our static scan found no known tracker SDKs. Online server connections and ContentDB still reveal ordinary network information to the services used; “no trackers found” does not mean offline-only.
Project and licence scope
The repository contains both FreeMiner and newer Luanti-derived material, including separate GPL and LGPL licence texts and per-mod notices. F-Droid lists the package as GPL-3.0-only. Individual bundled media and mods carry their own attribution files, so the overall package should not be treated as one licence for extracting every asset. In particular, eight head textures named head_19 through head_26 are marked CC BY-NC-SA, whose non-commercial condition is narrower than the code licence.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s source build of 5.17.0, signed with F-Droid’s key.
- It needs Android 7.0 or later and contains 32- and 64-bit ARM and x86 native libraries.
- Its measured SHA-256 is
b4ec77255b26cb483d3093eb75e344c89638a40ab98a16ce67bad70a2a767a0f, matching F-Droid’s signed index. - The package includes a playable default game. Network access is optional for local play but used for servers and ContentDB; our scan found no known tracker SDKs.
- Eight included head textures are CC BY-NC-SA; reuse of bundled assets must follow their per-file or per-mod notices rather than assuming the engine’s GPL terms cover everything.

Common questions
Is this APK the official FreeMiner release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled FreeMiner 5.17.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does FreeMiner need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 5.17.0 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can FreeMiner access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does FreeMiner contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 5.17.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is FreeMiner open source?
Its code is. The source code of FreeMiner is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence and published at https://github.com/freeminer/freeminer. Eight bundled head textures, `head_19` through `head_26`, are licensed CC BY-NC-SA; other bundled game media and mods carry their own notices.
Does FreeMiner include a playable game, or only an engine?
This 5.17.0 APK includes `games/default` inside an asset archive of roughly twenty megabytes, with crafting, carts, weather, animals and other mods. You can create a local world immediately; ContentDB is optional for additional games, mods and texture packs.
Is FreeMiner Minecraft for Android?
No. It is an independent open-source voxel project derived from Minetest/Luanti and inspired by block-building games. It does not contain Mojang code, Minecraft accounts, Marketplace content or Bedrock/Java world compatibility promises.
