Introduction
Translate You is a translation app from You Apps, a group of open-source Android projects led by the developer Bnyro. Its README calls it a “Privacy focused translator app built with MD3”. It doesn’t translate anything itself: it is a front end for online translation services, which you can switch between, or point at your own server. It is actively developed; version 20.0 came out in November 2026.
The services it works with
The code of 20.0 lists 15 services: Mozhi (the default), LibreTranslate, Lingva, DeepL (free API, paid API or the website), Kagi, MyMemory, Yandex, SimplyTranslate, Wikimedia’s MinT, Glosbe, Apertium, OneRing, PONS, LaraTranslate and the new Iciba engine. Several of them, such as Mozhi, Lingva, LibreTranslate and SimplyTranslate, are open-source servers that anyone can run, which is why the app lets you type in a server address. You can also have several services translate the same text side by side; that option is off by default.
What it does
- Over 150 languages, depending on the service, with a history of your translations.
- Text from images: it recognises text on the phone with the open-source Tesseract engine, then translates it. The recognition data for each language is a separate download from Tesseract’s project on GitHub, which you choose in the settings. Taking a photo goes through your camera app, so Translate You itself has no camera permission.
- Read aloud: the services that offer speech, such as Mozhi and Lingva, send audio; otherwise it uses your phone’s text-to-speech.
- Voice input uses the speech recognition app on your phone; without one, the microphone button doesn’t show.
- Works from other apps: the Translate option in the text-selection menu, sharing text or images to it, opening translate.google.com links, and a Quick Settings tile.
What goes online
From the 20.0 code:
- The translation service you chose, and only it, unless you turn on several. By default that is the public Mozhi server mozhi.aryak.me. Automatic translation is on by default: about 0.8 seconds after you stop typing, the text is sent, so you don’t need to press a button. You can turn this off in the settings.
- The language list of that service, when you open the translator.
- GitHub, when you open the text-recognition settings, to list the available language data, and when you download it.
There are no analytics, crash reports or update checks. The developer’s privacy policy lists nine services and doesn’t mention Mozhi, the default. Two details in the code: the app allows plain-HTTP servers and trusts certificate authorities you added yourself, so that you can use your own server; and this release writes the full content of each request and reply, your text included, to Android’s system log. Ordinary apps can’t read that log, but it can be read over ADB, with root, or by preinstalled system apps that hold the permission for it.
About this file
- This is the developer’s own build of version 20.0, via IzzyOnDroid, byte for byte the APK on the project’s GitHub release and signed by You Apps. F-Droid builds Translate You from source, checks that the result matches, and ships the same developer-signed file, so this file, F-Droid’s and GitHub’s update one another.
- It isn’t on Google Play.
- Version 20.0 adds Iciba and makes it the first SimplyTranslate backend because the release notes say its other providers were broken when this version was prepared. It also fixes the engine and theme dialogs disappearing when the system theme changes.
- The 9.9 MB file runs on Android 6.0 and later on 32- and 64-bit ARM. Version 20.0 compressed the Tesseract native libraries and excluded x86 binaries, sharply reducing the APK size. It asks for three permissions: internet, the microphone (only when you use voice input) and one that the AndroidX library adds for internal use. Our scan found no trackers.
- Translate You is licensed under the GPL-3.0. The screenshots come from the project’s listing and show the app as it looked in early 2023.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Translate You release?
Yes. It is the developer’s own release of Translate You 20.0, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 b3bc73b117df5dfe38130c6c2b946852ae7088557fe8e433f0d9983a6b55cc95).
What Android version does Translate You need?
Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 20.0 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Translate You access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does Translate You contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 20.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Translate You open source?
Yes. Translate You is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/you-apps/TranslateYou.
Which translation service does it use out of the box?
Mozhi, through the public server mozhi.aryak.me, with Google Translate selected as the engine behind it. Mozhi describes itself as “an alternative-frontend for many translation engines”, so your text goes to that server, which passes it to Google. You can pick another service, or another Mozhi server, in the settings.
Can it translate without internet?
No. Every service it supports runs online; the app has no translation model of its own. What does work offline is reading text from a photo, once you have downloaded the recognition data for that language.
Do I need an API key?
Not for the default. Some services need one: DeepL’s two API options need a DeepL key and Kagi needs a session token, while the official LibreTranslate server asks for a key unless you run your own LibreTranslate. Fields for keys and server addresses are in the settings.
Can I translate inside other apps?
Yes. Selected text gets a Translate option in Android’s text menu, you can share text or images to it, it opens translate.google.com links, and version 19 added a Quick Settings tile.
