Introduction

Next Player is a native Android video player written in Kotlin. It is built on Google’s Media3 playback library, with FFmpeg-based decoders added through its own companion library, so it can play formats a phone can’t decode by itself.

What it does

From the project’s README and listing:

  • Software decoders for H.264, HEVC and, since version 0.18.0, AV1.
  • Subtitles in SRT, SSA/ASS, TTML, VTT and DVB, with a subtitle delay setting.
  • Gestures: swipe up and down on the left for brightness and on the right for volume, and sideways to seek.
  • Picture-in-picture, background playback, a volume boost and a control lock.
  • Network storage: play from SMB, FTP, SFTP and WebDAV shares, plus DASH, HLS and RTSP streams.
  • New in 0.18.0: playlists (local and M3U) and a playback history.

Limits

The README says the app is still in development and expected to have bugs. SSA/ASS subtitles have limited styling support, and external audio tracks and online subtitle downloads are still only planned.

About this file

  • This is the developer’s own build, delivered through IzzyOnDroid. Its signing certificate matches the SHA-256 fingerprint the developer publishes in the README.
  • Google Play has the same app from the same developer. F-Droid carries it too, but was still on 0.14.1 when we checked.
  • The 18.9 MB file is for 64-bit ARM phones, needs Android 7.0 or later, and declares 11 permissions.
