Introduction
Luanti calls itself “a free open-source voxel game engine with easy modding and game creation”. It is less a single game than a platform: the engine handles the block world, multiplayer and the menus, and games and mods written in Lua decide what you do in it. You install those from ContentDB, the project’s own library, from inside the app.
Getting started
The first start asks you to install a game. Minetest Game, the classic one, stopped coming built in with version 5.8, so the app now arrives empty on purpose. ContentDB asks contributors to use free and open-source licences; its policy page admits that a few older packages still don’t, and says they will be removed.
Playing online
You can play alone, on a local network or on public servers. There is no central account: each server keeps its own player names and passwords. Public servers are run by third parties, not by the Luanti project.
On a phone
The engine has touch controls: a virtual joystick and buttons for moving, jumping and placing, and long presses for digging. The project’s Android notes warn that older devices may only register two touches at once and that complicated controls can be hard on a phone. Version 5.17 adds the start of gamepad support, enough to move and interact in the world but “not to use menus/GUIs”.
What goes online
The project’s privacy policy for the app lists four kinds of connection, all of which our reading of the 5.17 settings confirms:
- luanti.org, to check for a newer version. The setting behind it can be emptied, and then the engine never checks.
- servers.luanti.org, for the public server list.
- content.luanti.org (ContentDB), when you browse or update games and mods.
- The game servers you choose to join.
Once a game is installed, single-player needs no connection. Our scan found no tracker libraries.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 5.17.0, a stable release that fixes security vulnerabilities in both the client and the server. F-Droid makes one APK for all processors and signs it with its own key. The project’s own APKs on GitHub come one per processor type and are signed with its key (“Minetest Core-Devs”), so they can’t install over this one, or this over them, without uninstalling first.
- The 43.1 MB file runs on Android 5.0 and later (the project recommends Android 6 or newer), on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit. It declares 3 permissions.
- The engine’s interface is 96% translated into Portuguese (Brazil); each game on ContentDB has its own translations.
- The code is under LGPL-2.1 or later; the engine’s textures and sounds are mostly CC BY-SA 3.0, and its fonts are Apache 2.0.
- In August 2026 the project’s Google Play listing was taken down for a while over a copyright notice sent on Microsoft’s behalf; the project says Microsoft withdrew the notice and the app returned.
Minecraft is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB. Luanti is an independent project.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Luanti release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Luanti 5.17.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Luanti need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 5.17.0 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Luanti access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 3 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does Luanti contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 5.17.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Luanti open source?
Yes. Luanti is released under the LGPL-2.1-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/luanti-org/luanti.
Why is there nothing to play after installing?
Since version 5.8 (December 2023) Luanti ships without a game. When you first start it, it asks you to install one, from the Content tab, which browses ContentDB: “You need to install a game before you can create a world.” Minetest Game, which used to come built in, is one of the games you can install there.
Is Luanti the same as Minetest?
Yes. The project renamed itself Luanti with version 5.10, released in November 2024. The Android app kept its package name, net.minetest.minetest, so it updates the same way.
Are the Luanti apps on Google Play safe to use?
The project’s download page warns against “unofficial builds commonly found on the Play Store”, which it says may contain excessive advertising or spyware. Its own Play listing is under the developer name “Luanti” and the package name net.minetest.minetest, the same as this file.
