Introduction
Current Activity answers a simple question: which app, and which screen of it, is this? It shows the package name and the activity class of whatever is in the foreground, in a small window that floats over your other apps. That’s handy when you set up automations or app-specific rules, report a bug, or want to open a hidden settings screen directly.
Features
From the project’s description and release notes:
- A floating window you can move anywhere. You can copy its text, or copy from the notification.
- A Quick Settings tile to bring the window up from any screen.
- Since version 2.2.0: an activity history, a notification-only mode without the window, and a setting for how often it checks.
How it knows what’s on screen
It uses Android’s usage access data, which you grant when the app asks. You can also turn on its optional accessibility service, which the app says improves detection significantly. The service is off by default, and the app states that everything is processed on the device and nothing is logged. The README warns that some phones, Xiaomi’s among them, switch accessibility services off by themselves.
Good to know
- The window needs the Display over other apps permission.
- It can check GitHub for new versions, but that’s off by default, and it never installs anything by itself.
- Google Play carries the same app, linked from the project’s README. According to the README, the Play version leaves out the accessibility service and the permission to see all installed apps, so detection there can be less reliable. The file here is the full version from the developer’s GitHub releases, verified through IzzyOnDroid.
- Version 2.0.0 switched to a new signing key. If you still have a version older than 2.0, uninstall it before installing this one.
- The project credits an older app, TopActivity, as its origin. That app has a different package name,
com.willme.topactivity; this file is Current Activity itself,io.github.ratul.topactivity. - The file is 2.6 MB with no native code, and it declares six permissions.
