Introduction

Kiwix is an offline reader. You download a ZIM file, a compressed archive of a website such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary or Stack Exchange, and Kiwix lets you browse and search it without any connection. That makes it useful wherever internet access is expensive, slow or missing, or simply when you want a reference that keeps working on a plane.

Why this version and not Google Play

Kiwix now comes in two versions with different package names, and they don’t behave the same:

Google Play version Full version (this file)
Package name org.kiwix.kiwixmobile org.kiwix.kiwixmobile.standalone
Opening ZIM files Only from the app’s own folders From any folder, with the file picker
Scanning storage for ZIM files Removed Yes

The Kiwix developers explain the reason in their README. From Android 11, Google Play’s storage policy stopped the Play version from loading ZIM files from anywhere on the device. So if you download ZIM files with a browser or copy them from a computer, the Play version can only open them after you move them into its own folder. The full version can open them where they are. It asks for the All files access permission for that storage scanning, which the Play version doesn’t have.

Because the package names differ, both versions can be installed side by side. Bookmarks can be moved between them with export and import in Settings.

Getting content

Open the library screen in Kiwix to download ZIM files directly. Sizes range from small, focused archives to complete Wikipedia editions with images, which are very large, so check the size and your storage before you start a download. Wikipedia comes in many languages, including Portuguese.

The app also asks for location or nearby-devices permission. The README says this is for device discovery: Android requires location on version 12 and older, and the nearby-devices permission on 13 and later.

About this file

This is the 64-bit ARM (arm64-v8a) build of the full version, taken from the Kiwix project’s GitHub releases. We checked it against GitHub’s published hash, and its signing certificate is the same one IzzyOnDroid’s signed index lists for Kiwix. Kiwix also publishes a universal build (every CPU type in one much larger file) and a build for 32-bit phones, on its GitHub releases and download site.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Kiwix release?

Yes. It is the file from the project’s v3.14.1 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked Kiwix (SHA-256 6dfbfc62e16587a78aa2d9585ae9bb7f6973c2bf84034b7b90101a401409f5aa); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.

What Android version does Kiwix need?

Android 7.1 or later (API level 25). Version 3.14.1 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can Kiwix access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 14 permissions, and 5 of them need your approval first.

Does Kiwix contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 3.14.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Kiwix open source?

Yes. Kiwix is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-android.
