Introduction
Metrolist plays music from YouTube Music in its own open-source app instead of the official one. You can use it without an account, or sign in to your YouTube Music account to sync your songs, artists, albums and playlists. With more than 13,000 stars on GitHub it is one of the most popular apps of its kind, and other clients, ArchiveTune among them, are built on its code.
What it does
From the project’s feature list:
- Playback: stream any song or video from YouTube Music, background playback, downloads and caching for offline listening, silence skipping, a sleep timer.
- Audio: volume normalization, tempo and pitch control, an equalizer, crossfade.
- Lyrics: live synced lyrics, with AI-based translation of the lyrics.
- Library: local playlists, playlist import, reordering songs in a playlist or the queue.
- Social: listen together with friends in real time, Last.fm scrobbling, Discord Rich Presence.
- Look: Material 3 design with light, dark, black and dynamic themes, and a home screen widget.
Good to know
- Maintenance mode. The developers say Metrolist is in maintenance mode: they fix bugs and make small improvements, but aren’t accepting new features. They also stress that the app isn’t dead.
- It only works where YouTube Music does. If YouTube Music isn’t available in your country, the README says the app won’t work without a VPN or proxy to a supported region.
- The microphone is optional. Metrolist asks for microphone access for its music recognition feature, which identifies a song that is playing around you. The app’s manifest marks the microphone as not required, so you can decline.
- IzzyOnDroid flags the app NonFreeNet, because it depends on YouTube Music, a proprietary service.
This build contains native code for 32-bit and 64-bit ARM and for x86, so it runs on nearly any phone with Android 8.0 or later.
