Introduction
mpv is a free media player known for playing almost any format and for how much you can configure it. Its Android port, mpv-android, keeps the interface minimal. mpvExtended is a fork of mpv-android. It keeps the same engine, libmpv, and puts a friendlier interface and extra features around it.
What it adds
According to the project’s README:
- A simpler Material 3 interface, with a media picker in tree or folder view and search.
- Network playback from SMB, FTP and WebDAV shares, plus network streams.
- Picture-in-picture and background playback.
- External subtitle and audio tracks, and a zoom gesture.
- Playlists you can manage yourself.
- mpv’s own advanced configuration and scripting, for people who already have an mpv setup.
Good to know
- It is still in development. The README says to expect bugs and asks users to report them on GitHub.
- Storage access. It asks for access to your video files, and for the All files access permission. Judging from its features, that is presumably for the folder browser, which shows your videos by folder rather than through Android’s file picker.
- 64-bit ARM only. The build here contains native code for arm64-v8a only. The project publishes builds for other CPU types on its GitHub.
For a player on a phone that already has mpv-android, mpvExtended installs separately and doesn’t replace it: it uses a different package name.
