Introduction
NewPipe is the best-known open-source YouTube app for Android, and several others, including PipePipe and Tubular, are forks of it. It doesn’t use the YouTube API or Google Play Services. Instead it reads the service’s website directly, through its own NewPipe Extractor library. That is why it works on phones without Google services, and why you never have to sign in.
What it supports
YouTube is the best supported, but NewPipe also plays YouTube Music, PeerTube (any instance), SoundCloud, Bandcamp and media.ccc.de.
From the project’s feature list:
- Videos up to 4K, live streams, and subtitles.
- Background audio that loads only the audio stream, to save data.
- A popup player (picture-in-picture).
- Subscriptions without an account, with notifications for new videos and channel groups with their own feeds.
- Local playlists, watch history and search within it.
- Downloads of video, audio and subtitles.
- Options to hide comments, related videos and descriptions, and to open videos in Kodi.
Good to know
- It’s still called beta. The developers say you may run into bugs and ask for reports on GitHub.
- Updates matter. Because NewPipe reads YouTube’s pages, a change on YouTube’s side can stop playback until a new version is out. Maintained apps like this one get those fixes regularly.
- Not on Google Play, by design. The README states that putting NewPipe or any fork of it on the Play Store violates Google’s terms.
- Crash reports. Our scan found ACRA, a crash-reporting library, in the package. As always, that shows the code is included, not what it sends.
About this file
This is NewPipe from F-Droid, and it carries the developer’s own signature. F-Droid publishes a developer-signed APK only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Because the signature is the developer’s, it should update over a copy installed from NewPipe’s GitHub releases, and the other way round.

We host the current version and the 4 before it. Each older file matches the checksum in F-Droid’s signed index (the oldest ones come from its archive repository) and is signed with the same key as the current one, so newer versions install over it as normal updates. The permissions and trackers listed above describe the current version. Full changelog.
