Introduction

AnkiDroid is the Android app for Anki, the flashcard program that schedules each card for review just before you would forget it. Its README calls it “A semi-official port of the open source Anki spaced repetition flashcard system to Android”: it’s made by a volunteer team, not by Ankitects, the company behind Anki, but Anki’s own documentation lists it as part of the Anki ecosystem. It has more than ten million downloads on Google Play.

What it does

  • Spaced repetition: after each card you answer Again, Hard, Good or Easy, and the card comes back sooner or later. You can use the classic SM-2 scheduler or switch to FSRS, which Anki’s manual calls “an alternative to Anki’s legacy SuperMemo 2 (SM-2) algorithm”; it’s enabled in the deck options.
  • The same engine as Anki on the computer: this version runs the code of Anki 26.05, so decks, note types, cloze deletions and image occlusion work the same way.
  • Import Anki deck packages (.apkg), whole collections (.colpkg, which replaces everything on the phone) and text or CSV files. Get shared decks opens AnkiWeb’s library of decks made by other users.
  • Recording audio for cards, text-to-speech with any installed engine, review reminders, home-screen widgets, and themes, with a new one for e-ink screens in 2.25.

Syncing with the computer

AnkiDroid syncs through AnkiWeb, the free service also used by Anki on the computer and on iPhone, once you log in. Sync is manual unless you switch on automatic sync, which then syncs when the app starts or closes if the last sync was more than ten minutes ago. Over metered connections it warns you first by default. A custom sync server can be set instead of AnkiWeb.

Without logging in, the app works fully offline; to move a collection without AnkiWeb, export and import a .colpkg file.

What goes online

The privacy policy: “AnkiDroid does not collect or transmit any information on you or your activities by default.”

  • Crash reports go to a server run by the AnkiDroid team. The default setting is “Ask me”: after a crash the app asks before sending. In that dialog, the box Send error reports automatically is already ticked, so tapping Report also switches future reports to automatic. Untick it if you want to be asked each time. Our scan lists ACRA, the library that sends these reports.
  • Usage statistics go to Google Analytics if you switch on Share feature usage; it’s off by default. This F-Droid build contains only a placeholder key for it, which, according to the developers’ build file, Google’s servers reject.
  • Cards can load images from the internet if their content refers to them; the app also runs a small server on the phone itself for some screens.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of version 2.25.3, from 17 October 2026, signed with F-Droid’s key. It belongs to the 2.25 series, whose first release F-Droid skipped, so compared with the 2.24 versions it also brings 2.25.0’s changes: security fixes that stop cards from opening dangerous links or launching apps without permission, edge-to-edge screens, find and replace in the card browser, and Anki 26.05’s new features.
  • 2.25.3 restores ordinary HTTP and HTTPS links in cards after the 2.25 security change blocked them, keeps a tablet import dialog open during start-up, handles text-to-speech network errors, avoids a widget crash on devices whose widget manager is unavailable, and uses the media filename returned by Anki when pasted files are renamed. A MathJax change from 2.25.1 can still leave some cards cut off on the right; the report was closed without a fix.
  • Google Play blocked AnkiDroid’s updates for a while from late August 2026; in the team’s words, “it originally had to do with them rejecting our donations link”. The 2.25.2 changelog says Google has “allowed them out in the wild again”, but the Play version still leaves out the donation links. This version, like other non-Play builds, still shows them.
  • The 111.9 MB file runs on Android 7.0 and later, on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit. Its 17 permissions include the microphone (optional, for recording audio), notifications for reminders and sync, and all files access.
  • The screenshots are the project’s own, from 2023, and show an older interface.
  • AnkiDroid is licensed under the GPL-3.0, and the Anki code it includes under the AGPL-3.0 or later. The source of this version is at https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android/tree/v2.25.3. Common questions

Is this APK the official AnkiDroid release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled AnkiDroid 2.25.3 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does AnkiDroid need?

Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 2.25.3 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can AnkiDroid access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 17 permissions, and 4 of them need your approval first.

Does AnkiDroid contain trackers?

Yes. Version 2.25.3 contains code from ACRA, which matches an Exodus Privacy tracker signature. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.

Is AnkiDroid open source?

Yes. AnkiDroid is released under the AGPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/ankidroid/Anki-Android.

Can I install it over AnkiDroid from Google Play?

No. This file is F-Droid’s build, signed with F-Droid’s key; the AnkiDroid team signs its own APKs with another key. Sync to AnkiWeb or export a collection backup, uninstall, then install the other version. The team’s “Parallel” builds have different package names and install next to it instead.

Is AnkiWeb sync free?

Yes, with limits. Anki’s FAQ: “Collections on AnkiWeb are limited to a compressed size of 100MB, and an uncompressed size of 250MB”, not counting images and sounds, and “If you haven’t accessed your account or synced in the last 6 months, the data on your account might get deleted.” You can also point AnkiDroid at a sync server of your own.

Does AnkiDroid send data to Google?

Not unless you agree. Usage statistics are off by default and, according to the developers, this F-Droid build carries a placeholder key that Google Analytics rejects anyway. Crash reports go to AnkiDroid’s own server, and by default the app asks first.

Why does it ask for all files access?

This version keeps your collection in a public AnkiDroid folder so that it survives an uninstall: in the permission’s words, it “Saves your collection in a safe place that will not be deleted if the app is uninstalled”. The Google Play version isn’t allowed this permission.
