Introduction
YTDLnis is a graphical front end for yt-dlp, the command-line downloader, and it exposes more of yt-dlp’s options than most apps of its kind. Its README says it can download audio and video from more than 1,000 websites, the sites yt-dlp supports.
What it does
From the project’s README:
- Playlists, with each item editable before the download starts.
- A download queue, downloads scheduled for a date and time, and several downloads at once.
- Trimming by timestamps or by chapters, and removal of segments marked in SponsorBlock.
- Embedding of subtitles, metadata and chapters.
- Custom commands, plus a terminal for running yt-dlp directly.
- Cookies, for content your own account can access.
- A download card that opens straight from Android’s share menu, so you don’t have to open the app, and an incognito mode.
Besides pasted links, it has an in-app search with a choice of search engine and a home screen, which can show video recommendations if you add an API key in the settings.
Keeping it working
Websites change often, and downloads depend on yt-dlp keeping up. YTDLnis can update its yt-dlp engine from inside the app, from either the stable or the nightly channel. It can also check the project’s GitHub for new versions of the app itself, and install them with Android’s installer, through Shizuku, or with another installer app. We found the Shizuku library in the APK.
Download responsibly
YTDLnis is a general-purpose tool. Many sites’ terms restrict downloading, and copyright applies to what you save, so download only content you have the right to keep.
Good to know
- This file comes from IzzyOnDroid and carries the developer’s own signature. F-Droid publishes YTDLnis with the same signature, so builds from GitHub, F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid can update one another.
- The build is for 64-bit ARM phones and is 49.8 MB. It needs Android 7.0 or later.
- It declares 22 permissions. They include access to all files, most likely so it can save downloads to any folder you choose, and exact alarms and starting at boot, presumably for scheduled downloads.
- The README reserves the name: forks and unofficial builds may not call themselves YTDLnis.
