Introduction

ArchiveTune is an open-source player for YouTube Music. Its developers credit Metrolist for the base framework and have built their own player on top. The emphasis is on privacy, a clean design and detailed controls.

A new package name

  • Version 13.4.0, the one IzzyOnDroid still lists, used the package name moe.koiverse.archivetune. Current releases use moe.rukamori.archivetune, and the repository now lives under the GitHub account rukamori. Android treats the two as different apps, so this version installs next to an old copy instead of updating it.
  • Both are signed with the same key, a certificate issued to “Koiverse”, so the new releases come from the holder of the original signing key.
  • IzzyOnDroid doesn’t carry the new package, so this file comes from the project’s GitHub release instead.

What it does

From the project’s README and release notes:

  • Accounts: sign in with more than one account and switch between them quickly. Your playlists, liked songs and subscriptions appear after sign-in.
  • Local files: play songs stored on the phone as well as streaming.
  • Audio: EBU R128 loudness normalization, tempo, pitch and speed controls, crossfade, and the system equalizer and spatial audio.
  • Lyrics: word-by-word lyrics from the BetterLyrics project, with SimpMusic’s lyrics API as another source, and translation since version 15.0.0.
  • Music recognition from a Quick Settings tile, which can also listen in the background since version 14.0.0. This is why the app asks for the microphone, and you can decline if you don’t use it.
  • New in 15.0 and 15.1: SponsorBlock, YouTube Music podcasts, playlist export as CSV, and Android Auto support.

Good to know

  • Regional availability. If YouTube Music isn’t offered in your country, the README says you need a VPN or proxy to a supported region for the initial data fetching.
  • It depends on YouTube Music, a proprietary service, so a change on YouTube’s side can break it until an update arrives.
  • Only the official build is supported. The developers don’t support forks in any way, and the ArchiveTune name and branding aren’t covered by the open-source licence.
  • FOSS and GMS builds. The project publishes a FOSS build, the one we host, and GMS builds that use Google services, for example for Google Drive backups. Our scan found no known tracker code in the FOSS build.

About this file

  • The 37.2 MB file has native code for ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, runs on Android 8.0 and later and declares 17 permissions.

Common questions

Is this APK the official ArchiveTune release?

Yes. It is the file from the project’s v15.1.0 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked ArchiveTune (SHA-256 bb2e5b7e476c0de63b06686209c0f60e904f9988e9bb452da280596e8ae98e33); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.

What Android version does ArchiveTune need?

Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 15.1.0 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can ArchiveTune access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 17 permissions, and 5 of them need your approval first.

Does ArchiveTune contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 15.1.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is ArchiveTune open source?

Yes. ArchiveTune is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/rukamori/ArchiveTune.

Will this update my old ArchiveTune app?

No, if your copy uses the old package name, moe.koiverse.archivetune, as version 13.4.0 does. Current versions use moe.rukamori.archivetune, so Android installs this one as a separate app. Your settings and downloads in the old app don’t carry over by themselves. Both are signed with the same key.
