Introduction

Breakout 71 is a brick breaker by Renan Le Caro, a developer in France, who calls it “a roguelite take on the breakout genre, optimised for short runs and replayability.” It started in February 2025 and is updated often; the same game runs in a browser, on itch.io, on Google Play and on F-Droid. The Android app is a small wrapper around the web version, which is bundled inside it.

How it plays

  • Seven levels per run, drawn from more than 600, with the first level built from the icon of your starting upgrade.
  • Coins and combos: broken bricks release coins; where the ball hits the paddle alone decides where it bounces.
  • 95 upgrades, unlocked as your total score grows. Some add extra lives or levels; Chill turns a run endless with no more upgrades.
  • Medals for quick clears, catching every coin and never bouncing without a hit, each giving extra upgrade picks.
  • A custom start where you choose your first upgrade, a creative mode, a level editor and a history of your runs.

Levels and where their art comes from

Each level is a small grid of coloured bricks forming a picture. Many are the developer’s own; more than 400 were submitted by players through the game’s Discord, without a stated licence. A dozen are copied from a pixel-pattern website that marks its patterns only as copyrighted, and some reproduce characters and logos from other games and films, such as Pac-Man, a Pokéball and a Minecraft creeper. The level “Mario!” credits its picture with the note that “The sprite belongs to Nintendo”. The 25 background patterns come from pattern.monster, under the MIT licence, whose notice the app doesn’t include.

Everything else is generated by the code: the sounds are synthesised while you play, there is no music, and the text uses your phone’s monospace font.

What goes online

Nothing. The app declares no internet permission, and the game makes no network requests; links open in your browser. After five hours of play, the menu shows a reminder about donating, which you can turn off. The developer’s privacy policy: “If you install the app through google play or f-droid, no information will be collected at all by me.”

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of version 29856654, from 7 October 2026, signed with F-Droid’s key. F-Droid packages the game file that the developer builds and commits to the repository, rather than compiling the game itself. Compared with 29856652, the build commit adds the symbols category to the Degoogle level; we found no other game-data or code change between the two packaged builds.
  • The 0.6 MB file runs on Android 6.0 and later, on any processor, and declares no permissions apart from one AndroidX adds for internal use.
  • Breakout 71 is licensed under the AGPL-3.0; itch.io’s page says GPL-3.0. The level pictures described above are not covered by any licence the project states.
  • The screenshots are the project’s own, from April 2025; the game’s menus have changed since.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Breakout 71 release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Breakout 71 29856654 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Breakout 71 need?

Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 29856654 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.

Can Breakout 71 access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 1 permission, and none of them needs your approval first.

Does Breakout 71 contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 29856654 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Breakout 71 open source?

Its code is. The source code of Breakout 71 is released under the AGPL-3.0-only licence and published at https://gitlab.com/lecarore/breakout71. The pictures of many levels are not covered: hundreds were submitted by players without a stated licence, and some copy characters from other games.

How does a run work?

A run is seven levels. Broken bricks drop coins; catching them scores, and your combo, the number of coins per brick, resets if the ball comes back to the paddle without hitting a brick. After each level you pick an upgrade, with extra choices for clearing fast, catching every coin or always hitting something between bounces.

Can I play it in Brazilian Portuguese?

Yes: Settings › Language has “Brasil”. From the code, the game matches your phone’s language by its first two letters only, so on a phone set to Brazilian Portuguese it may start in European Portuguese until you pick Brasil.

Can I keep my progress when switching to another version?

Not by installing over this copy: it is signed with F-Droid’s key, while the developer’s own APK on itch.io and the Google Play version use other keys. Export your save in the game first, uninstall, then import it.

Why is the version number so long?

It is the build time. The developer’s build script says “the version number is just a unix timestamp in minutes”; 29856654 is 7 October 2026.
