Introduction
MAME4droid (Current) is an Android port of MAME, the long-running emulator of arcade machines and old computers. Its README: “MAME4droid (Current) is an Android port of the MAME 0.289 emulator. Developed by David Valdeita (Seleuco) … It supports over 40,000 ROMs”. Besides arcade games, it runs computers such as the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and MSX. It is independent of MAME’s own developers: the README says “Not Affiliated with MAMEDev”.
What it does
- Arcade and computer emulation from MAME 0.289, with a dynamic recompiler for 64-bit ARM to speed up demanding systems. The README warns: “Late-90s 3D arcade games require a high-end Android device to run at full speed.”
- Controls: Bluetooth and USB gamepads, on-screen layouts with one to six buttons, a touch lightgun and tilt control. It also runs on Android TV.
- NetPlay: two phones play together over the internet, in rollback or lockstep mode, without router setup. Version 1.41.2 brings rollback to all of Capcom’s CPS-3 games, Street Fighter III among them, and lets the host pass its game state to the other player in more games.
- Display: CRT-style shaders and overlays, a simulation of vector monitors, and HDR rendering.
What goes online
From the code of this version, nothing connects on its own with default settings. The README sums up the rest: “No ads, nothing to unlock, nothing to subscribe to”.
- NetPlay, when you start or join a game: a direct connection to the other phone, with address lookups through Google’s and Cloudflare’s STUN servers.
- Public Rooms, only after you agree to it in a dialog. Then the app contacts the matchmaking server when it starts and when you open NetPlay, at most every 15 minutes, and sends statistics about games started from the board, such as the game, connection quality and country.
- Artwork downloads from a third-party service, Arcade Italia’s database, are off until you turn them on.
About this file
- This is the official GitHub release 1.41.2. GitHub lists the release on 16 September 2026; the APK attached to it now was uploaded on 20 September, built from a later commit that changed the NetPlay protocol, under the same version number. Our file’s SHA-256 starts b2e05497.
- Its signing certificate has the generic subject that Google Play App Signing gives the keys it creates, and the file carries a Google Play source stamp from the same day, so it is most likely the APK Google Play distributes. The developer publishes no fingerprint.
- The 169.6 MB file is for 64-bit ARM only and needs Android 10 or later. It declares 5 permissions: internet, Wi-Fi state, local network access, vibration and keeping the device awake. Our scan found no trackers.
- MAME4droid is licensed under the GPL-2.0, and MAME as a whole under the GPL-2.0 or later, with many of its files under the BSD-3-Clause licence. Inside the APK, a data file holds the floppy-drive sounds and artwork under CC0, shaders from several authors, and community data such as the game history database, a cheat collection and category lists, whose licences aren’t stated.
- “MAME® is a registered trademark of Gregory Ember.” This page isn’t affiliated with MAME’s developers.
- The app is translated into Brazilian Portuguese, help pages included.
- The screenshot is the developer’s, from Google Play, and shows its early version 1.0.

Common questions
Is this APK the official MAME4droid release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s v1.41.2 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked MAME4droid (SHA-256 218b28a42dba410d29adfd2233041032f521fbfb44b3d075dce406b135ab3077); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does MAME4droid need?
Android 10 or later (API level 29). Version 1.41.2 is built for Android 17 (target API 37). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can MAME4droid access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 5 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does MAME4droid contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.41.2 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is MAME4droid open source?
Its code is. The source code of MAME4droid is released under the GPL-2.0 licence and published at https://github.com/seleuco/MAME4droid-Current. The game history database, cheat collection and category lists bundled in its data file come from third-party community projects without a stated licence.
Does it come with games?
No. Its README: “MAME4droid is strictly an EMULATOR and DOES NOT INCLUDE ROMS or copyrighted material.” You need ROM sets for the games you own, and they have to match the MAME version this build is based on: “Ensure you are using the 0.289 romset for proper compatibility.” We don’t provide any.
Does it contain any keys?
Yes, ones from MAME itself. To run some protected arcade boards, MAME carries the per-game decryption keys of their cartridges or boards: Capcom’s CPS-3 and Kabuki, Sega’s Naomi, Sammy’s Atomiswave, SNK’s Neo Geo graphics encryption and IGS’s PGM2. They are compiled into this app. They do nothing without the game ROMs. For other boards, such as CPS-2, MAME reads the key from a file in the user’s ROM set instead.
Can I play online with a friend?
Yes, with NetPlay, which connects two phones directly and supports rollback for many games. You can share an address, or use Public Rooms, an optional board for finding a partner that asks your consent before first use: “your IP address is shared with them and kept on the server for 60 seconds.” Both phones need the same version, because the network protocol changed in this one.
Is it the same as MAME4droid on Google Play?
Google Play has two. MAME4droid Current, under the same package name as this file, is this app. The older MAME4droid, based on MAME 0.139, is a different app. This file is most likely the one Google Play distributes (see below), but we couldn’t confirm that, so don’t count on it updating a Play install.
