Introduction
Open Patience is a solitaire app made by Dirk Wilden, who publishes it as d-rk. It started in August 2026 and describes itself as “a free, open-source solitaire game (Klondike, FreeCell), built as a vehicle for clean, testable architecture”: the game rules live in a pure Dart engine, with the Flutter interface on top. Version 1.1.2 came out on 6 October 2026.
How it plays
- Klondike, drawing one or three cards, and FreeCell with four, two or six free cells.
- Tap or drag cards; double-tap sends a card to its foundation.
- Undo and redo, with a timer and a move counter.
- Auto-finish: a button appears once the board can be run out to the foundations, and plays the rest for you. From the code, it is a simple finisher, not a solver: it doesn’t search for a way to win.
- Records for each variant: your total wins and a top ten of your fastest games, with fewer moves breaking ties.
- It remembers the game you left and lets you carry on.
The menus are in English. Sound is on by default and can be switched off.
Cards, sounds and fonts
There are no card images in the app: faces and backs are drawn by the code, with the ranks in the Fredoka font and the suits as standard text symbols. The card sounds come from the Kenney Casino Audio pack, which is in the public domain under CC0; the win sound is generated by a script in the project. The splash screen and menu banner are renders of the project’s own 3D scenes, and the fonts, Fredoka, Lilita One, Quicksand and Satisfy, are under the Open Font License or the Apache-2.0.
Known issues
Two bug reports were open on 13 October 2026: one about duplicate cards in a Klondike deal, and one about a card getting stuck in Klondike with three cards drawn, after an undo. Version 1.1.2 fixed one stuck-card case, caused by tapping the stock with a second finger while dragging a card.
About this file
- This is the developer’s own build of version 1.1.2 for 64-bit ARM, byte for byte the APK on the project’s GitHub release. F-Droid rebuilt it from the same source, confirmed it matched and distributes the developer-signed file, so copies from GitHub and F-Droid update one another. The developer’s own F-Droid repository uses the same key.
- The 20.8 MB file runs on Android 7.0 and later. Most of the size is Flutter’s engine and the compiled app; there is no game engine of its own beyond the rules code. It declares no permissions apart from one that AndroidX adds for the app’s internal use.
- Open Patience is licensed under the AGPL-3.0 only.
- The screenshots are the project’s own: the menu, a Klondike deal and a FreeCell deal.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Open Patience release?
Yes. It is the developer-signed release of Open Patience 1.1.2 that F-Droid distributes, which F-Droid publishes only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index, and it is signed with the developer’s certificate (SHA-256 8df8a6e8bcac974b85e666eccb799963bc02c1ca6d0aa83d82f7ac6e20fec423).
What Android version does Open Patience need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 1.1.2 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can Open Patience access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 1 permission, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Open Patience contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.1.2 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Open Patience open source?
Yes. Open Patience is released under the AGPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/d-rk/open-patience.
Which games does it include?
Two, in five variants: Klondike with one or three cards drawn at a time, and FreeCell with the classic four free cells, a harder version with two and an easier one with six. It isn’t a large collection of solitaire games.
Can every deal be won?
Not necessarily. Deals are shuffled at random from about a billion possibilities, and we found no step in the code that keeps only winnable deals. The auto-finish button appears only once the remaining cards can be moved to the foundations without further choices.
Does it run on older 32-bit phones?
This file is for 64-bit ARM phones. The developer and F-Droid publish separate builds of the same version for 32-bit ARM and for 64-bit x86, signed with the same key.
Does it go online or show ads?
No. The app declares no Android permissions, so it has no internet access, and the code has no ads, analytics or update check. Its README: “No ads, no tracking, no network.”
