Introduction
osu! is a free rhythm game by ppy in which you tap, hold and spin in time with music on levels, called beatmaps, made by its players. This is osu!(lazer), the rewritten version that runs on computers and phones alike. Its README calls it “A free-to-win rhythm game”, and it has no ads.
The game on Android
- Four modes: osu!, the default, where you “tap circles, hold sliders, and spin spinners to the beat of the music”; osu!taiko with drums; osu!catch, where you “collect fruits falling to the beat”; and osu!mania, “a vertical scrolling rhythm game”. Each has its own touch controls.
- Touch play counts for rankings. In osu! mode, scores played by touch get the Touch Device mod automatically, which adjusts their difficulty rating.
- Phones play in landscape; tablets can rotate freely. Beatmap, skin and replay files can be imported by opening them with osu!.
- Online, with a free account: score submission and leaderboards, multiplayer, ranked play, playlists, the daily challenge and chat. The last full release added a setting to block invites and private messages from people who aren’t your friends.
Beatmaps and copyright
Beatmaps are made and uploaded by players. ppy is open about what that means: “All game levels (beatmaps) are created and uploaded by community members, often without correctly obtaining permission from relevant copyright holders.” It removes infringing beatmaps on request under the US DMCA, and runs the Featured Artist program, whose songs are licensed for use in osu!. You find beatmaps in the game’s own listing or on osu.ppy.sh.
What goes online
From the code of this version:
- ppy’s servers, for your account, scores, leaderboards, multiplayer, chat and beatmap downloads.
- Crash reports to ppy’s own error-tracking server, with your username and user ID when you are signed in. They are on in the official build, and the only way to turn them off is an environment variable, which you can’t set on Android.
- GitHub, at every start, to check for a new release.
The privacy policy adds that the game sends an identifier derived from your hardware and software configuration, submits your scores with replay data, and “contains executable code that is used to detect the usage of cheat software.” In its words, “All analytics are hosted in-house.”
About this file
- This is the official GitHub release 2026.1005.0, from 5 October 2026, matching the SHA-256 hash GitHub publishes and signed by ppy (Dean Herbert, ppy Pty Ltd). ppy calls it a security hotfix and points to 2026.920.0, two weeks earlier, for the last full list of changes; on Android, those included more attempts to fix invisible sliders and to reduce display latency.
- The 513.2 MB file is large because it carries the whole game, about 130 megabytes of its resources, three times: once each for 64-bit ARM, 32-bit ARM and 32-bit x86. Beatmaps take more space as you download them. It runs on Android 5.0 and later and declares 5 permissions: internet, keeping the screen awake, and two system permissions, for battery information and the frame buffer, that Android doesn’t grant to ordinary apps, plus one AndroidX adds for internal use.
- Our tracker scan matches Sentry, the crash-reporting library described above.
- osu!’s code is licensed under the MIT licence. The game resources come under CC BY-NC 4.0, and the README adds that the licence “does not cover the usage of the “osu!” or “ppy” branding”, which “is protected by trademark law”. ppy has around 30 open Android issues on GitHub, such as the game not starting on some devices because of a MIDI error.
- There are no official Android screenshots, so this page has none.

Common questions
Is this APK the official osu! release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s 2026.1005.0-lazer release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked osu! (SHA-256 f11271ddf9d9a0f46652c4574a8ba783b732cd22ba2eb62a609e0180c39dba70); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does osu! need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 2026.1005.0-lazer is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can osu! access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 5 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does osu! contain trackers?
Yes. Version 2026.1005.0-lazer contains code from Sentry, which matches an Exodus Privacy tracker signature. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.
Is osu! open source?
Its code is. The source code of osu! is released under the MIT licence and published at https://github.com/ppy/osu. The game’s resources, its sounds, skins, fonts and textures, are under a separate licence, CC BY-NC 4.0, which allows only non-commercial use, and the “osu!” and “ppy” names are trademarks.
Is osu! on Google Play?
No. ppy publishes the Android version as an APK on GitHub, and osu.ppy.sh links there: on an Android phone its download page offers “Download osu! for Android 5 or later”. It updates by telling you: “A newer release of osu! has been found”, and the notification opens the GitHub release, from which you install the new version over the old one.
Where do I get songs?
osu! comes with none: “osu! doesn’t come with any beatmaps pre-loaded.” On first start it offers the tutorial and recommended beatmaps, and the in-game listing, which needs a free account, has many more. Songs from the Featured Artist program are, in ppy’s words, “free for use within osu! and has no risk of removal”.
Do I need an account?
Only for online play. Multiplayer, ranked play, playlists, the daily challenge and the beatmap listing ask you to sign in; beatmaps you already have can be played without an account. ppy’s services are “not designed for children under the age of 13”.
Can I play in Brazilian Portuguese?
Yes: “português brasileiro” is in the language settings. The translation is made by the community and covers most of the game; anything missing appears in English.
