Introduction
Fossify Keyboard is an open-source on-screen keyboard from Fossify, the community project that took over the Simple Mobile Tools apps after they were discontinued in late 2023. It carries on from Simple Keyboard, under a package name of its own, so it installs as a separate app. Fossify labels it beta, which it says means testing and development are still under way.
What it does
From the project’s README, changelog and source code:
- 44 layouts in version 1.9.1, among them Portuguese and Portuguese HCESAR, Spanish, French AZERTY and BÉPO, German QWERTZ, Russian, Arabic and Hebrew, and English in QWERTY, Dvorak, Colemak, Colemak-DH and Workman. An optional key switches between the languages you use.
- Emoji by category, with the ones you used recently. The emoji key can be hidden.
- A clipboard manager: keep clips, pin the ones you use often, and export or import them.
- Typing options: keyboard height, a number row, key borders, popups on key press, vibration and sound, automatic capitals, and moving the cursor by swiping along the space bar.
- In the source code, the voice key hands over to a voice input app on your phone, and on Android 11 and later the keyboard can show a password manager’s autofill suggestions.
What it doesn’t do
- No word suggestions or autocorrect, and no swipe typing. Both are open feature requests; Fossify’s maintainer has said that if suggestions ever come, they will be optional.
- It doesn’t go online. The APK doesn’t request internet access, and Fossify’s privacy policy says the keyboard doesn’t send what you type to Fossify.
About this file
- This is Fossify’s own build of version 1.9.1, from February 2026 and still the latest release, delivered through IzzyOnDroid and signed by Fossify. It is byte for byte the APK on the project’s GitHub release and the one F-Droid distributes, and IzzyOnDroid rebuilt it from the source code and got the same file.
- Fossify says its Google Play and F-Droid releases use the same package name and signing key, so this file can be installed over the Play version when it is the same version or newer.
- The 17.1 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later and declares only 2 permissions. More than half of it is a colour emoji font bundled with the app, the kind Android’s EmojiCompat library uses to show newer emoji on phones whose system font lacks them.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Fossify Keyboard release?
Yes. It is the developer’s own release of Fossify Keyboard 1.9.1, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 affdb124d3f4720c2f98dbca9eacba0514fba4306e20a2786c861c3c0d6ff292).
What Android version does Fossify Keyboard need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 1.9.1 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Fossify Keyboard access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 2 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does Fossify Keyboard contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.9.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Fossify Keyboard open source?
Yes. Fossify Keyboard is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Keyboard.
Can I install this over Fossify Keyboard from Google Play?
Yes, as long as the version you install is the same as the Play version or newer. Fossify signs its Google Play and F-Droid releases with the same key and keeps the same package name, so Android treats this file as an update and keeps your data.
