Introduction
Fossify Music Player is an open-source player for the music stored on your phone, from Fossify, the community project that took over the Simple Mobile Tools apps after they were discontinued in late 2023. It carries on from Simple Music Player, under a package name of its own, so it installs as a separate app. Fossify lists it as stable.
What it does
From the project’s website, changelog and source code:
- Browse your library by album, artist, genre, folder or track, in tabs you can hide.
- Playlists: make one from a folder or from the current queue, and import or export playlists as M3U files.
- Queue controls, shuffle and repeat, a sleep timer, and playback speed from 0.25× to 3×.
- An equalizer. In the source code it uses Android’s own equalizer effect, so the bands and presets depend on your phone.
- Tag editing: change a song’s title, artist and album, and rename the file.
- Excluded folders: audio in a folder you exclude doesn’t show up in the library.
- Widgets for the home screen, and controls on the lock screen.
Good to know
- Fossify publishes no list of supported formats. In the source code, playback goes through Google’s Media3 ExoPlayer and the phone’s own decoders, without an FFmpeg extension, so most likely the common formats play and rarer ones depend on your phone. An open bug report says MIDI files stop playback.
- There is no Android Auto support; Fossify’s maintainer has opened a feature request for it.
- The APK doesn’t request internet access, so the player only works with what is already on your phone.
- Version 1.8.1, from February 2026, is still the latest release.
About this file
- This is Fossify’s own build, delivered through IzzyOnDroid and signed by Fossify. It is byte for byte the APK on the project’s GitHub release and the one F-Droid distributes, and IzzyOnDroid and an independent builder both rebuilt it from the source code and got the same file.
- Fossify says its Google Play and F-Droid releases use the same package name and signing key, so this file can be installed over the Play version when it is the same version or newer.
- The 11.0 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later and declares 8 permissions.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Fossify Music Player release?
Yes. It is the developer’s own release of Fossify Music Player 1.8.1, byte for byte as IzzyOnDroid distributes it. Its SHA-256 matches IzzyOnDroid’s signed index, and it is signed with the certificate IzzyOnDroid records for the app (SHA-256 affdb124d3f4720c2f98dbca9eacba0514fba4306e20a2786c861c3c0d6ff292).
What Android version does Fossify Music Player need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 1.8.1 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Fossify Music Player access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 8 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.
Does Fossify Music Player contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.8.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Fossify Music Player open source?
Yes. Fossify Music Player is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Music-Player.
Can I install this over Fossify Music Player from Google Play?
Yes, as long as the version you install is the same as the Play version or newer. Fossify signs its Google Play and F-Droid releases with the same key and keeps the same package name, so Android treats this file as an update and keeps your data.
