Introduction
FreeTube is a well-known YouTube player for Windows, Mac and Linux built around privacy. FreeTube Android is a fork of it that runs on phones, developed as its own project on GitHub. It keeps the desktop app’s idea: you don’t sign in, your subscriptions and history stay on your device, and Google’s cookies and scripts never run.
It describes itself as beta. The developer says it works well for most people, but there are still bugs and missing features.
How it gets videos
The APK has a built-in extractor that reads YouTube directly. It doesn’t use the official YouTube API. You can switch it to use an Invidious instance instead, an alternative YouTube front end that fetches videos on your behalf. The project also offers a web app version, which only works through Invidious.
What it does
From the project’s feature list:
- Subscriptions without an account, with export and import.
- Profiles that split your subscriptions into separate, focused feeds.
- Local playlists and history, and search within them.
- SponsorBlock, to skip sponsored segments.
- Trending and chapter support.
- A setting to use a proxy, such as Tor.
- Distraction-free settings to hide parts of the interface, and a family-friendly-only mode.
- Full theme support.
Good to know
- Small and simple to install. At 5.1 MB with no native code, it runs on any CPU. It needs Android 10 or later.
- If you use FreeTube on a computer: both versions can export and import subscriptions, and since this is a fork of the desktop app, moving them across that way should presumably work.
- IzzyOnDroid flags it NonFreeNet, because it relies on YouTube.
