Introduction
SkyTube is an open-source YouTube client. It isn’t affiliated with YouTube, as its README says, and it needs no Google or YouTube account. It reads YouTube through its own fork of the NewPipe Extractor.
What it does
From the project’s README:
- Channel blacklisting, and hiding videos with few views.
- Bookmarks, subscriptions imported from YouTube, and backup and restore of both, kept on your phone.
- Downloads, and SponsorBlock for skipping sponsored segments.
SkyTube and SkyTube Extra
There are two editions. This one, SkyTube, is fully open source. SkyTube Extra adds the official YouTube player and Chromecast support through a closed-source library. F-Droid builds only the open-source edition, removing the proprietary libraries first, and the README notes that its updates can arrive up to five days after Extra’s.
Good to know
- Like every YouTube client, it breaks when YouTube changes things on its side. The last two releases fixed exactly that: opening channels, and loading and downloading videos.
- Its version numbers climb in thousandths: this is 2.999, released in May 2026, after 2.998.
- SkyTube isn’t on Google Play. F-Droid flags it NonFreeNet, because it depends on YouTube.
- This is F-Droid’s build, signed with F-Droid’s key. The 9.3 MB file has no native code, runs on Android 4.4 and later, and declares four permissions.

Common questions
Is this APK the official SkyTube release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled SkyTube 2.999 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does SkyTube need?
Android 4.4 or later (API level 19). Version 2.999 is built for Android 9 (target API 28). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.
Can SkyTube access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 4 permissions, and 1 of them needs your approval first.
Does SkyTube contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 2.999 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is SkyTube open source?
Yes. SkyTube is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/SkyTubeTeam/SkyTube.
