Intra
by Jigsaw · Apache-2.0 · open source
A one-switch app that protects your DNS lookups from tampering: it sends them encrypted over HTTPS, which gets around blocking that works by faking DNS answers.

Introduction
Intra is made by Jigsaw, a technology incubator within Alphabet, Google’s parent company. It targets one kind of interference: DNS manipulation, where a network gives false answers to stop sites from loading. Intra sends your DNS lookups encrypted, using DNS over HTTPS, so the network can’t read or change them.
How it works
Intra runs a local VPN on the phone, but only to take over DNS: lookups go out encrypted, and all other traffic is forwarded as usual. The project also says it defeats some forms of TLS-level blocking. It doesn’t route your traffic through a remote server the way a full VPN does.
Choosing a server
By default lookups go to Google Public DNS. The settings offer 16 built-in services, including Cloudflare, Quad9, CleanBrowsing, OpenDNS and Canadian Shield, a custom server address, an option to try all the built-in ones, and a list of apps whose DNS should bypass Intra.
Limits
- Intra only protects DNS. The app itself says there are more complicated blocking techniques and attacks it doesn’t protect against, and that it isn’t as secure as a trusted VPN.
- It uses Android’s VPN slot, so turning it on disconnects any other VPN.
- If Android’s own Private DNS is already on, the app tells you there’s no need to enable Intra.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build, signed with F-Droid’s key. F-Droid removes the Google Firebase analytics and crash reporting that Intra’s own build includes; our scan found no tracker SDKs.
- Google Play has Intra from Jigsaw, signed differently, so the two don’t update each other.
- The 15.8 MB file runs on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, needs Android 5.0 or later, and declares nine permissions.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Intra release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Intra 1.5.1 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Intra need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 1.5.1 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Intra access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 9 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Intra contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.5.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Intra open source?
Yes. Intra is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/Jigsaw-Code/Intra.
