Introduction

LibreTorrent is a BitTorrent client by Yaroslav Pronin (proninyaroslav), developed on GitLab with a mirror on GitHub. It has no ads and no paid edition; the README says development “is 100% funded by heroic people like you”. Google Play has it from the same developer, with more than a million downloads.

What it does

From the README and release notes of version 4.1.1:

  • BitTorrent 2.0 and WebTorrent support, built on libtorrent through the libtorrent4j library.
  • Choose files inside a torrent, move them while they download, and move finished downloads automatically to another folder or an external drive.
  • Streaming with sequential download, so a video can play while the rest arrives (see the questions below).
  • RSS and Atom feeds with automatic downloads, filtered by words or regular expressions.
  • Create your own torrents, including ones with many or large files.
  • Scheduling: start and stop at set times, optionally turning Wi-Fi on and off with them.
  • The usual network options: DHT, peer exchange, encryption, local peer discovery, UPnP and NAT-PMP, µTP, IP filtering with eMule and PeerGuardian lists, and proxies.
  • Android TV and tablet layouts, dark and black themes, and over 35 languages, Brazilian Portuguese among them. Since 4.1 you can choose the app’s language separately from the system’s.

A client, nothing more

LibreTorrent has no built-in torrent search, no catalogue and no preset feeds; the code contains no torrent sites to download from. It only works with torrents you bring. Feeds are ones you add, and each new feed has automatic downloading switched off until you turn it on. Only download what you have the right to.

What it connects to

  • As soon as the main screen opens, the torrent engine starts, even with no torrents, and contacts four DHT bootstrap servers written into the app: dht.libtorrent.org, router.bittorrent.com, dht.transmissionbt.com and outer.silotis.us. With the default settings it also asks your router to open a port (UPnP and NAT-PMP) and looks for peers on the local network.
  • Defaults: DHT, local peer discovery, µTP, UPnP, NAT-PMP and peer exchange are on; encryption is set to “Prefer”; the listening port is random, between 37000 and 57010; no proxy. Mobile data is allowed, but torrents pause while you are roaming.
  • Like every BitTorrent client, it shows your IP address to the other peers and trackers of each torrent you share.
  • WebTorrent: libtorrent’s default STUN server, Google’s stun.l.google.com, is left unchanged.
  • Streaming runs a small web server, on by default, that listens only on the phone itself (127.0.0.1, port 8800).
  • Crash reports go only by e-mail: after a crash, a dialog offers to send one, and nothing is sent unless you do. The privacy policy: “The developer doesn’t collect personally identifiable data. Only except when you send crash logs.” The crash library, ACRA, is what our scan lists as a tracker.

There are no analytics and no update checks.

Permissions

  • All files access, so you can save anywhere. The Google Play version removes it, and the README tells Android 12+ users who need it to use “another version (F-Droid or direct APK)”. This is one.
  • Changing Wi-Fi state for the scheduler’s option to switch Wi-Fi on and off, and exact alarms for scheduled start and stop.
  • Starting at boot, for auto-start, which is off by default, and to set up the scheduler again after a restart.
  • A foreground service that keeps sharing running; the app’s note for Google explains that sharing “is a continuous process and cannot be limited to 6 hours a day”.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of version 4.1.1 for 64-bit ARM phones, signed with F-Droid’s key. F-Droid builds a separate file for each processor type and no universal one; older 32-bit phones need F-Droid’s armeabi-v7a build instead. The developer’s own APKs are signed with a different key (its SHA-256 fingerprint is in the README), so moving between those and this file means uninstalling first.
  • Version 4.1.1, from July 2026, only went back to the previous build of the libtorrent4j engine, to keep Android 8.1 and older supported, and updated translations. That engine build, a prebuilt library from Maven Central, carries OpenSSL 3.5.2 from August 2025; 4.1’s engine had OpenSSL 3.5.5.
  • Version 4.1 added the language setting, searching and sorting the files inside a torrent, the proxy kill switch above, and a fix for a server-side request forgery flaw when fetching torrent and feed links.
  • The 23.2 MB file needs Android 7.0 or later.
  • The screenshots are the project’s own; we left out the ones that show other people’s torrents or real peer addresses.
  • LibreTorrent is licensed under the GPL-3.0 or later.

Common questions

Is this APK the official LibreTorrent release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled LibreTorrent 4.1.1 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does LibreTorrent need?

Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 4.1.1 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can LibreTorrent access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 18 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.

Does LibreTorrent contain trackers?

Yes. Version 4.1.1 contains code from ACRA, which matches an Exodus Privacy tracker signature. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.

Is LibreTorrent open source?

Yes. LibreTorrent is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://gitlab.com/proninyaroslav/libretorrent.

Can I search for torrents in LibreTorrent?

No. The search box on the main screen only filters the torrents you have already added, and version 4.1 added a search within a torrent’s file list. You add torrents yourself: .torrent files, magnet links, web links to torrents, or RSS and Atom feeds you subscribe to.

Can I keep it to Wi-Fi, or to when the phone is charging?

Yes, in the settings, though both are off by default: “Only unmetered connections” keeps it to Wi-Fi and similar networks, and another switch only downloads and uploads while charging. Battery control pauses everything below a battery level you set. By default it also pauses torrents while you are roaming.

Can I watch a video while it is downloading?

Yes. Streaming is on by default: on a file, choose “Share stream URL…” and open the link in a video player on the phone. Tick “Sequential download” for that torrent, which is off by default, so the file arrives from the start.

Can it stop all traffic if my VPN or proxy drops?

Not for VPNs: a request to bind it to a VPN interface is still open. Version 4.1 added “Require proxy for all connections” for proxies, which also turns off DHT, local peer discovery, UPnP and NAT-PMP, because, in the app’s words, they “cannot be routed through a proxy and would otherwise expose your real IP address”.
