Introduction

Material Files is an open-source file manager that follows Google’s Material Design. It covers the everyday file jobs and adds a few that most built-in file managers don’t.

What it does

From the project’s README:

  • Archives: view, extract and create common compressed formats. Since version 1.7.5, password-protected ZIP archives it creates use AES-256 instead of the older ZipCrypto.
  • Network storage: browse and manage files on FTP, SFTP, SMB and WebDAV servers.
  • Root access, to view and manage system files.

Shizuku, new in 1.7.5

Version 1.7.5 added support for Shizuku. In the source code, the service that normally uses root can run through Shizuku instead when it’s available, with ADB-level rights rather than full root. We found both the Shizuku library and libsu, a root library, in the APK.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build, signed with F-Droid’s key. F-Droid removes the code that brings in Google’s Firebase analytics and crash reporting, which the Google Play version includes; our scan found no tracker SDKs in this file.
  • Because the signatures differ, it won’t update a copy from Google Play, or the other way round, without uninstalling first. The README itself points out that app stores can’t update apps signed with a different certificate.
  • It needs Android 6.0 or later, even though the README still says 5.0. The 10.9 MB file runs on ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and declares 14 permissions.

Common questions

Is this APK the official Material Files release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Material Files 1.7.5 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does Material Files need?

Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 1.7.5 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.

Can Material Files access the internet?

Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 14 permissions, and 2 of them need your approval first.

Does Material Files contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.7.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is Material Files open source?

Yes. Material Files is released under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles.
