Introduction
Tasks.org is a to-do list app developed by Alex Baker, built on the source code of Astrid, a popular task app that was bought and shut down in 2013. It is actively maintained: 15.10, 15.11 and 15.12 came out between August and September 2026.
What it does
From the project’s description and the source of version 15.12:
- Subtasks nested as deep as you like, repeating tasks with detailed rules, including the last day of a month since 15.11, start dates that hide a task until then, and reminders at a time or when you arrive at or leave a place.
- Adding tasks to your phone’s calendar automatically, if you want.
- Works fully offline. Sync is optional, with any of:
| Sync | In this build |
|---|---|
| CalDAV, your own server or a provider’s | Free |
| EteSync, end-to-end encrypted | Free |
| DAVx⁵, DecSync | Free |
| Google Tasks | Free; uses a Google account added to your phone. The project’s documentation lists no nested subtasks there |
| Microsoft To Do | Free, personal Microsoft accounts only; work and school accounts need the Play version |
| Tasks.org Cloud | Needs a GitHub sponsorship of $3 a month or more, or a Play subscription |
- Backups to a file, or uploaded to Google Drive, and a Tasker plugin. Version 15.12 adds a content provider that lets other apps read and write tasks, with permissions Android asks you to grant; the project marks this interface as unstable.
This build and the Play version
Tasks.org has two editions, and this file is the one F-Droid builds. In it, every Pro feature is unlocked in the code, purchases are switched off, and the app asks for donations instead of subscriptions. The Google Play version sells the same features for a price you choose and contains Firebase Crashlytics and PostHog analytics, which are on by default there with a switch to turn them off. None of those are in this file.
What goes online
Without any account, one thing: once a day, on Wi-Fi and while charging, the app reads the project’s blog feed to show announcements. You can turn that off under Settings › Help & feedback › Blog notifications. Everything else happens only when you use it: your sync service, OpenStreetMap map tiles and place search when you pick a location, and Google Drive if you upload backups there.
Our scan found one tracker library, OpenTelemetry (OpenCensus). It comes with Google’s HTTP library, which the Google Tasks and Drive features use. The APK only contains the tracing interface, without an implementation or anything that sends data, so it does nothing; the questions below explain more.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of version 15.12, compiled from the source and signed with F-Droid’s key. Neither the Google Play version nor the
tasks-fdroidAPK on the project’s GitHub, which the developer signs with their own key, can update it or be updated by it without uninstalling first. Back up your tasks before switching. - The 28.6 MB file runs on Android 8.0 and later and declares 34 permissions. Most are for reminders (notifications, exact alarms, restarting after a reboot), location reminders and maps, the calendar, and sync. Sixteen are icon-badge permissions for various phone makers’ launchers, which come with a badge library.
- Tasks.org is licensed under the GPL-3.0.
- The screenshots are the project’s own; they show an older design than 15.12.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Tasks.org release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Tasks.org 15.12 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Tasks.org need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 15.12 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Tasks.org access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 34 permissions, and 6 of them need your approval first.
Does Tasks.org contain trackers?
Yes. Version 15.12 contains code from OpenTelemetry (OpenCensus, OpenTracing), which matches an Exodus Privacy tracker signature. That shows the code is bundled, not how the app uses it.
Is Tasks.org open source?
Yes. Tasks.org is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/tasks/tasks.
Do I have to pay for sync in this version?
Not for most of it. In the F-Droid build every in-app Pro feature is unlocked in the code, and the project’s documentation says “F-Droid users do not require a subscription to unlock in-app features.” CalDAV, EteSync, DAVx⁵, DecSync, Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do are free. Only the Tasks.org Cloud service needs a GitHub sponsorship of $3 a month or more, or a subscription started in the Google Play version.
Can I bring my tasks from another app?
The importer only reads Tasks.org’s own backups. Tasks stored in Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, a CalDAV server, EteSync or another app synced through DAVx⁵ can be brought in by adding that account instead.
Do location reminders need Google Play services?
Not in this build. It uses Android’s own proximity alerts and an OpenStreetMap map, and needs the background location permission. Picking a place goes online: searches go to Mapbox, and addresses are looked up on the project’s own Nominatim server.
Why does a tracker scan list OpenTelemetry?
Google’s HTTP library, used for Google Tasks and Google Drive, brings in the OpenCensus tracing interface. This APK has no OpenCensus implementation or exporter, so the library falls back to a tracer that does nothing, and nothing is sent.
