Termux:Boot
by Tarek Sander · GPL-3.0-only · open source
A tiny add-on that runs your own Termux scripts every time the phone finishes starting, so servers and background jobs come back by themselves after a reboot.

Introduction
Termux:Boot does one job: after your phone starts up, it runs the scripts you keep in a folder in Termux. It’s how people keep an SSH server, a sync job or a chat bot going across reboots without opening Termux by hand.
Setting it up
- Install it from the same source as your Termux, then open it once from the app drawer. That first launch is what allows it to run at boot.
- In Termux, create the folder it reads:
mkdir -p ~/.termux/boot - Put your scripts in that folder. If there are several, they run in sorted order.
The project’s own example is a script at ~/.termux/boot/start-sshd containing termux-wake-lock && sshd. It starts the SSH server, and termux-wake-lock keeps the phone from going to sleep while it runs. The project suggests starting boot scripts with termux-wake-lock for that reason.
If scripts don’t run
The Termux wiki recommends turning off battery optimization for both Termux and Termux:Boot, since Android may otherwise stop them. Some phone makers add their own limits on apps starting in the background; the project doesn’t document those, but if your scripts still don’t run, check your phone’s settings for an autostart or background-activity option.
Good to know
- The whole app is 26 KB and declares just two permissions: one to receive the boot-completed event and one to keep the phone awake.
- Version 0.8.1 changed little. Its developers raised the internal version number so that Google Play would stop trying to replace copies installed from F-Droid or GitHub, updates that could only fail because the signatures differ.
- It only works with a Termux from the same source; our Termux plugins guide explains why. The Google Play version of Termux has this feature built in instead.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Termux:Boot release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Termux:Boot 0.8.1 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Termux:Boot need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 0.8.1 is built for Android 9 (target API 28). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.
Can Termux:Boot access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 2 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Termux:Boot contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.8.1 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Termux:Boot open source?
Yes. Termux:Boot is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/termux/termux-boot.
