Introduction
Termux:Widget turns scripts into buttons. You keep scripts in a folder in Termux, and the plugin puts them on your home screen, so running one takes a single tap instead of opening a terminal and typing.
Setting it up
- Open Termux at least once first, so it can finish installing its base files. Then install Termux:Widget from the same source.
- Put scripts in
~/.shortcuts/. These run in a terminal session you can watch. - Put scripts in
~/.shortcuts/tasks/to run them in the background instead, without a terminal window. - Add the Termux:Widget widget, or a shortcut for a single script, to your home screen.
After adding or changing scripts, tap the widget’s refresh button so it picks them up. Hidden files and folders (names starting with a dot) and broken symbolic links don’t appear.
Extras
- Icons: a PNG in
~/.shortcuts/icons/named after the script (the script name plus.png) becomes that shortcut’s icon. - Dynamic shortcuts: from version 0.14, scripts in
~/.termux/widget/dynamic_shortcuts/can be turned into the shortcuts that pop up when you long-press the app’s icon. Android caps how many: 5 on Android 7, 10 on Android 10 and 15 on Android 11 and later. - Device controls: version 0.13 added “Termux Shortcuts” to the device controls Android 11 introduced in the power menu. Scripts from the
tasksfolder run in the background there and the rest in the foreground. A script that shows a dialog or toast stays out of sight until you leave the controls view.
Good to know
- It only works with a Termux from the same source; our Termux plugins guide explains why. The Google Play version of Termux has these functions built in instead.
- The file is 5.9 MB, with native code for ARM and x86, 32- and 64-bit, and it declares two permissions.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Termux:Widget release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled Termux:Widget 0.15.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does Termux:Widget need?
Android 7.0 or later (API level 24). Version 0.15.0 is built for Android 9 (target API 28). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Termux:Widget access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 2 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Termux:Widget contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.15.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Termux:Widget open source?
Yes. Termux:Widget is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/termux/termux-widget.
