Introduction
Sopa de Letras is an offline word-search game whose interface is in European Portuguese. A setting changes the words used in future boards between the pt-PT and en-US dictionaries, but menus such as Definições, Jogar and Contra-relógio remain Portuguese. Drag across a row, column or diagonal to mark a hidden word.
Its main campaign contains 300 levels in ten worlds. Boards range from 6×6 to 12×12. Board size is selected separately; Easy, Medium and Hard change the number of words, allowed directions and filler letters rather than resizing the grid. Hard can place words in all eight directions, including backwards diagonals.
Four ways to play
- Campaign: progress through the 300 prepared levels and worlds.
- Daily puzzle: one board for the calendar date. The generation is deterministic, so players on the same language and date get the same puzzle without a server assigning it.
- Time Attack: find the words against a clock.
- Mystery mode: the list shows only each hidden word’s length, while unused letters spell a secret word. You can submit a guess at any time from its clue; finding every hidden word reveals the answer automatically.
The included dictionaries have 1,666 European Portuguese and 1,913 English words, grouped into ten categories per language. Brazilian players should expect pt-PT spellings rather than a pt-BR word list. We ran the project’s own tools/validate_words.py checker against the fixed 1.0.5 source, and it reported validate_words: ok. That validates the repository’s list rules; it is not a judgement about every translation or word choice.
Accessibility and offline boundary
The project lists a colour-blind mode, adjustable font sizing, direction assistance and TalkBack support. Those are upstream features; we did not complete a screen-reader play-through on a phone.
Version 1.0.5 asks only for vibration and an AndroidX internal receiver permission. It has no internet permission, so playing, the daily board and local progress cannot contact an advertising, analytics or game server. Our scan also found no known tracker SDKs. Settings and progress remain on the device, subject to Android’s normal app-backup behaviour.

Common questions
Is this APK the official Sopa de Letras release?
Yes. It is the developer-signed release of Sopa de Letras 1.0.5 that F-Droid distributes, which F-Droid publishes only when its own build from the source code reproduces it. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index, and it is signed with the developer’s certificate (SHA-256 315a9140a3ad2e6822f0da3476e1f1009de62d32546c7025b5a21faa2b6a06ee).
What Android version does Sopa de Letras need?
Android 8.0 or later (API level 26). Version 1.0.5 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Runs on 64-bit and older 32-bit ARM phones.
Can Sopa de Letras access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 2 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does Sopa de Letras contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 1.0.5 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is Sopa de Letras open source?
Yes. Sopa de Letras is released under the MIT licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/SyscallBrain/SopaDeLetras.
Does Sopa de Letras work offline?
Yes. Version 1.0.5 does not request Android’s internet permission. Its Portuguese and English word lists, campaign and daily-puzzle generation are included in the app.
Is it only in Portuguese?
The interface is only in European Portuguese. A setting changes the puzzle-word dictionary between European Portuguese and English; it does not translate the menus. The project includes 1,666 Portuguese words and 1,913 English words across ten categories for each language.
