Introduction

AAAAXY is a puzzle platformer by Rudolf “divVerent” Polzer. Its README: “AAAAXY is a nonlinear 2D puzzle platformer taking place in impossible spaces. Although your general goal is reaching the surprising end of the game, you are encouraged to set your own goals while playing. Exploration will be rewarded, and secrets await you!” It also warns: “And beware of a minor amount of trolling.”

How it plays

The whole game is one large map whose rooms connect in ways that can’t exist in real space: a corridor that leads back to where it started, and connections that are switched on and off while you play. The README’s mathematical notes call it “the universal cover of a massively twisted space”. You find abilities along the way, such as standing on platforms or carrying objects, which open up new parts of the map.

  • No lives: touching spikes sends you back to the last checkpoint.
  • Pick-a-Path: the map of checkpoints you have visited, from which you can jump back to any of them.
  • Speedrunning: the game times your run and shows it in the end credits, with categories such as Any%, 100%, All Secrets and No Teleports.
  • Graphics palettes imitating old computers and consoles, from monochrome CGA and EGA to the NES and the Game Boy, plus the PICO-8 and SWEETIE-16 palettes since 1.8.34, and a slider to tone down screen flashes. Four separate save slots.
  • About a dozen languages, among them Portuguese, German, Japanese and Chinese.

What goes online

Nothing: the app asks for no permissions at all, and it doesn’t open any links. The privacy page: “there is no data collection, processing, sharing or transmission taking place in AAAAXY.”

The music and art are free to reuse

The game’s 13 music tracks come from OpenGameArt and are all CC0 (public domain). The sound effects were made by the developer with sound tools whose settings are in the repository. The player sprite is based on GrafxKid’s CC0 “Classic hero and baddies pack”, the main font is GNU Unifont, and the rest of the art and the level are the developer’s own under the Apache-2.0 licence. The licences ship inside the game and can be read under Credits.

About this file

  • This is F-Droid’s build of version 1.8.34, from 16 October 2026, for 64-bit ARM phones, signed with F-Droid’s key. The developer’s APKs on GitHub and itch.io are signed with the developer’s key, and the Play version can’t carry F-Droid’s, so you can’t install one over the other.
  • 1.8.34 adds the PICO-8 and SWEETIE-16 palettes, replays the ticking clock when you backtrack (#735), makes small changes to the ending and to one level, and updates the Go toolchain, which accounts for most of the larger file.
  • The 48.2 MB file needs Android 6.0 or later. The app declares OpenGL ES 3.1, although the developer notes “Actually only GLES 2.0 is required, but stating a higher requirement to exclude low-end devices.” On Android 6 and 7 the launcher icon may not display properly (#554).
  • The screenshots come from the game’s F-Droid listing and show the on-screen buttons.
  • AAAAXY is licensed under the Apache-2.0. F-Droid’s source archive for this exact build is at https://f-droid.org/repo/io.github.divverent.aaaaxy_108300344_src.tar.gz.

Common questions

Is this APK the official AAAAXY release?

It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled AAAAXY 1.8.34+20261016.4235.88c7a979 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.

What Android version does AAAAXY need?

Android 6.0 or later (API level 23). Version 1.8.34+20261016.4235.88c7a979 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.

Can AAAAXY access the internet?

No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 0 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.

Does AAAAXY contain trackers?

No known trackers: our scan of version 1.8.34+20261016.4235.88c7a979 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.

Is AAAAXY open source?

Yes. AAAAXY is released under the Apache-2.0 licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/divVerent/aaaaxy.

How long does it take?

The README: “To reach the end, a new player will take about 4 to 6 hours, a full playthrough can be finished in about 1 hour and the end can be reached in about 15 minutes.” Everything beyond the end, such as notes and secrets, is optional.

It stutters on my phone. What can I do?

The developer’s advice to a player with frame drops was to go into the settings and set “quality” to “lowest” and “graphics” to “SVGA”. By default the quality setting is automatic and adjusts itself.

Can I play with a controller?

Yes. On-screen buttons appear while you use the touchscreen and disappear when you switch to a gamepad, which works since a fix in 2023. The touch buttons can be moved in the settings.

Can I move my save to the Play Store version or a computer?

Not from inside the app yet; an in-app export is an open request (#277). Saves are files in the app’s folder, which the user guide shows how to copy with adb. Uninstalling the app deletes them, and this file is signed by F-Droid, so it can’t be updated by the Play or GitHub versions.
