Introduction
SuperTux is, in its README’s words, “a jump’n’run game with strong inspiration from the Super Mario Bros. games for the various Nintendo platforms. Run and jump through multiple worlds, fighting off enemies by jumping on them, bumping them from below or tossing objects at them, grabbing power-ups and other stuff on the way.” The story: Tux’s friend Penny has been captured by Nolok, and Tux sets out to rescue her.
The game comes complete: the story mode’s two worlds, Icy Island and Rooted Forest; Bonus Island I, which opens once you have collected 40 Tux Dolls; and Revenge in Redmond, a level pack “celebrating the good ol’ days of SuperTux for its 20th anniversary”. Nothing has to be downloaded or supplied.
What 0.7.0 brought
Version 0.7.0, from 15 March 2026, is the first stable release since 0.6.3 in December 2021, and the first since the team revived its Android build. From its release notes:
- New sprites and moves for Tux: sliding down slopes, a strong buttjump, rolling as a rock, and crawling.
- New graphics for most backgrounds, tiles, objects and enemies, and new music.
- The story mode, Revenge in Redmond and Bonus Island I redesigned, with new characters and enemies and reworked bosses.
- Local multiplayer, keys, an item pocket for a spare power-up, and bonus islands unlocked with Tux Dolls.
If you played the 0.7.0 betas, the notes warn that their story-mode saves are kept as .old files and don’t carry over automatically; the team suggests starting fresh.
On a phone
- Touch controls appear automatically on a touchscreen: a direction pad, jump and action buttons, pause, and the item pocket. The options let you hide them, change their size and turn off the vibration that goes with them.
- Game controllers and keyboards work too, and the game runs in landscape only.
- Known problems in the bug tracker: changing the language from the options can freeze the app for a while; with the fire flower, letting go of a carried ice block or bomb with the touch Action button shoots a fireball that destroys it; and setting up a joystick manually crashes on Android 15.
What goes online
Nothing until you agree (see the questions above). Once the internet is allowed:
- Add-ons: the Add-ons menu loads a catalogue of extra worlds and level packs from the team’s
addonsrepository on GitHub. The list is fetched live and can change without an app update. In October 2026 it had 12 entries, among them a fan port of level layouts from a Scratch remake of Super Mario Bros. - Release check: only if you also said Yes to the second question, a small version file on GitHub is checked at startup, and you are notified of a new release.
- No certificate checks: the code switches off verification of the servers’ HTTPS certificates for these downloads, so they aren’t protected against tampering on the way. The add-ons’ checksums come from the same catalogue, so they don’t help.
- The Donate entry in the main menu opens the team’s donation page in the browser after asking. There are no ads, purchases or trackers, and nothing is sent automatically when the game crashes.
About this file
- This is the team’s own build of SuperTux 0.7.0 for 64-bit ARM, from its GitHub release, identical to the file there. The team also publishes builds for 32-bit ARM and x86. It is signed with the team’s key; the same certificate (SHA-256
bc1ac64e…1b94) signs all four 0.7.0 builds and both betas. The team doesn’t publish a fingerprint. - At 296.0 MB it is large because everything is inside: graphics, music, sounds, levels and translations. It declares 2 permissions: internet and vibration. Our scan found no trackers.
- It needs Android 9 or later, as explained in the questions above.
- SuperTux isn’t on F-Droid yet. A maintainer in June 2026: “It should be ready in the next release, however, no guarantees.”
- The whole game is translated into Brazilian Portuguese.
- The screenshots are the team’s own desktop screenshots of 0.7.0; on Android, the touch controls are drawn on top.
- Some content is parody: Revenge in Redmond and an enemy named “BSOD”, an angry monitor with a blue screen, poke fun at Microsoft, and one bonus level is called “Mario’s Supposed to Deal With This…”.
Licences
SuperTux’s code is licensed under the GPL-3.0 or later. For the game’s data, the README says: “Most of the data subdirectory is also licensed under CC-by-SA”. Every level and world map carries its own licence, almost all CC-BY-SA 4.0. The exceptions, all inside this APK, from the project’s own credits file and history:
- Non-commercial:
kill.wav, the sound that plays every time Tux dies, and the conveyor belt graphics, used in the Bonus Island level “Area 42”, are listed as “submitted by RodirodDude CC BY-NC 4.0”. - No stated licence: eight music tracks (
voc_night_alt,counter_current,deeply_rooted,late_sunset,calm_ocean,christmas_theme,classicandtheme_old). The credits file says all music is by wansti under GPL and CC-BY-SA “unless stated otherwise”, but the project’s history shows several of these are by other people. The composer ofcalm_oceanwrote that “Good amount of inspiration with this came from ‘Aquatic Ambience’ from Donkey Kong Country’s OST.” - The default font,
SuperTux-Medium.ttf, used for English and Portuguese text, has no licence file or licence statement. - Sound effects: 27 files aren’t listed in the credits at all, and many others name an author but no licence.
- The four “voc” music tracks are credited to wansti in this version; after the release, the team corrected that to semajD, under CC-BY-SA 3.0.

Common questions
Is this APK the official SuperTux release?
Yes. It is the file from the project’s v0.7.0 release on GitHub, byte for byte, and it matches the SHA-256 checksum GitHub publishes for it. It is signed with the certificate we recorded when we first checked SuperTux (SHA-256 bc1ac64e45435b9d69beaf4a77cb02c3e9e36bb6dc0d85ceb33665b9f85e1b94); a release signed with a different key would not be published here.
What Android version does SuperTux need?
Android 9 or later (API level 28). The APK’s manifest declares API level 21, but its developers’ build file says “SuperTux can only run on Android 9 and up”, because the SDL library it uses relies on iconv, which Android added in version 9. Version 0.7.0 is built for Android 15 (target API 35). Needs a 64-bit ARM phone; 32-bit-only devices are not supported.
Can SuperTux access the internet?
Yes. The APK requests Android’s internet permission. In total it declares 2 permissions, and none of them needs your approval first.
Does SuperTux contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 0.7.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is SuperTux open source?
Its code is. The source code of SuperTux is released under the GPL-3.0 licence and published at https://github.com/SuperTux/supertux. Two of its assets, the sound played whenever Tux dies and the conveyor belt graphics, are under the non-commercial CC BY-NC 4.0 licence, and eight music tracks and its default font have no stated licence.
Does SuperTux go online?
Not unless you allow it. On the first start it asks: “Would you allow SuperTux to connect to the Internet?” Only after a Yes does it ask whether to check for new releases at startup. With the internet allowed, it can fetch the add-on catalogue and the version file from the team’s GitHub. Both settings can be changed later in the options.
Why Android 9 when it installs on older phones?
The app’s manifest says Android 5.0, but a comment by the developers in its build file says: “SuperTux can only run on Android 9 and up”, because a library it uses needs a function Android added in version 9. They left the lower number to avoid build errors. It is also built only for 64-bit ARM; the team publishes 32-bit ARM and x86 versions too.
Can I use the level editor?
Not on Android. The menu entry is hidden in Android builds, with the comment “The level editor is not mobile friendly; hide for now”, so the reworked editor in the 0.7.0 release notes is for computers.
Can I install it over the Google Play version?
We don’t know. A Google Play listing with the same package name was updated with 0.7.0 in March 2026, though supertux.org still says SuperTux left Google Play in February 2025. We couldn’t check which key Google Play’s copy is signed with; if Android refuses to install one over the other, the keys differ.
