Introduction
KISS is an open-source launcher that skips the grid of icons. Its home screen is a search box over your wallpaper, with the things you used recently underneath: you type the first letters of what you want and tap the result. The project’s motto is that browsing for apps should be secondary.
What you can search
- Apps, contacts and Android settings, plus the shortcuts that apps offer.
- Phone numbers to call, sums for its calculator (percentages since version 3.26), and timers such as “5m”.
- Web addresses, which open directly, and web searches through a list of search engines you can edit. Only Google is switched on at first.
Each kind of result can be switched off in the settings.
It learns from you
Results you open more often move up the list. The history under the search box can be sorted six ways, from most recent (the default) to most frequent or by time of day; the order you choose there doesn’t change search results. You can also give apps tags, extra keywords to find them by.
Looks and extras
- ADW-style icon packs, four themes plus a dark mode that can follow the system setting, and notification dots.
- Widgets, but only in its Minimalistic UI mode, which hides the history.
- Gestures for each of the four swipe directions, and double tap to lock the screen on Android 9 and later. The lock uses Android’s accessibility service; the project says it reads no data through it.
- Support for Android’s Private Space and for work profiles.
No internet access
The APK doesn’t request the internet permission, and the project’s privacy policy says KISS collects no data and uses no third-party services. It follows that web searches are handed to your browser or another app. The contacts permission is for finding people in search. The phone permissions let it call a number you pick without opening the dialer and, only if you switch that option on, add incoming calls to its history.
About this file
- This is F-Droid’s build of KISS 3.26.0, signed with F-Droid’s key. KISS is also on Google Play; because the signatures differ, you have to uninstall one before installing the other.
- The 2.2 MB file has no native code, runs on Android 5.0 and later, and declares 9 permissions. Version 3.25 dropped support for Android 4.

Common questions
Is this APK the official KISS Launcher release?
It is F-Droid’s build rather than the developer’s own: F-Droid compiled KISS Launcher 3.26.0 from the published source code and signed it with its own key. Its SHA-256 matches F-Droid’s signed index. Because the key is F-Droid’s, it won’t install over a copy from Google Play or GitHub without uninstalling first.
What Android version does KISS Launcher need?
Android 5.0 or later (API level 21). Version 3.26.0 is built for Android 16 (target API 36). Pure Java/Kotlin, so it runs on any CPU.
Can KISS Launcher access the internet?
No. The APK doesn’t request Android’s internet permission, so the app can’t go online by itself. In total it declares 9 permissions, and 3 of them need your approval first.
Does KISS Launcher contain trackers?
No known trackers: our scan of version 3.26.0 found no code matching the Exodus Privacy tracker signatures. The scan covers known tracker libraries; it doesn’t show what data the app itself sends.
Is KISS Launcher open source?
Yes. KISS Launcher is released under the GPL-3.0-only licence, and its source code is published at https://github.com/Neamar/KISS.
